One of my favorite parts of doing this blog, is reading the wonderful books that knitters and crocheters write. Finding a good pattern book, one with consistenly good designs, is like finding treasure. And I have found a treasure for all crocheters with Fabulous & Flirty Crochet, by Katherine Lee, AKA SweaterBabe.
This book has 20 projects in it, arranged into two sections. The first section is presented like a fashion magazine. A photograph of the garment or accessory is shown, with a brief description. The photographs are well taken – you don’t have to wonder what is hiding behind some bizarre pose of a model. The second section has the instructions. I like this approach because I can view the fashions without being distracted by instructions and a lot of print.
The beginning of the book has some very helpful basic information for crocheters. One thing I was pleased to see was the chart of various yarn weights. Now that this has been standardized within the fiber industry, it makes it much easier to substitute yarns. Katherine has a page devoted to these weights and explains the crochet gauge and how it will read on the label (which is usually written for knitters). She also explains about tools and equipment.
One of the best features, and even the most experienced of us can use this, is the table of abbreviations and symbols. It is easy to forget them and having this easy-to-read set of tables is great.
The book is large enough to be able to comfortably read the print, but compact enough to slip inside your project bag. And it is spiral for easy page navigation, but has a cover that lays over the spiral so it won’t snag or tangle up your yarn.
The only weakness I could find in the book, and I really had to hunt for a downside, was that the patterns for the tops and skirt were not written up to plus-size patterns. I don’t see this as a real negative though as most plus-size knitters and crocheters are used to making modifications and already know how to do it. I would like to see more patterns that are suited for plus-size women, however.
The price is good, the patterns are fabulous (and they really are – honest!) and I can’t imagine someone buying this book and not making every single thing in it. I am thinking ahead to making the Flutter-Sleeve Top and the Slim-Fitting Cardigan. They are beautiful!
Great job Katherine!!
