As I mentioned earlier this month, a number of celebrities have had their DNA tested by African Ancestry, Inc., including Whoopi Goldberg. Her test results have apparently shown that she had ancestors in Guinea-Bissau. That country’s leaders have invited Whoopi to visit her tribes – Papel and Bayote.
Whoopi was part of the PBS show African American Lives that used genealogy, oral history, family stories, and DNA analysis to trace the the participants’ lineages. Participants included Whoopi Goldberg, Dr. Ben Carson, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Dr. Mae Jemison, Quincy Jones, Dr. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, Chris Tucker and Oprah Winfrey. The show’s website has an extensive section discussing how genetics has been used to clarify and supplement genealogical studies.
Unfortunately, Whoopi won’t be able to visit because she doesn’t fly.
