Hey, Blisstree reader! Check out our new three-part series of personal essays about smoking by Bill, Blisstree commenter and former smoker.

On July 19, 2006, I published a post called What happens to Your Body if You Stop Smoking Right Now? It received 1/4 million hits within 24 hours, and a handful of comments. Since that date it has gained a life of its own, as it accumulates millions of views as well as pages and pages of responses from readers. With people either detailing their own successes/failures to put down the puff, or offering advice for those of us wanting to do the same, the comments section has turned into an impromptu support group, and forum for, discussing nicotine addiction.

      I think my body would go into shock first. But reading the article is driving me to quit. It is rather odd, I use to fuss at my mother for smoking and now look at me.
      There are times I really want to quit, I hate the smell in my clothes, hair and skin but everytime I say no more, some stressful sitution arise and I reach for the pack.
      Any suggestions websites which will help me.

      I think that one of the most successful methods to stop smoking is in your brain. Think about when you were young and fit, when your lungs were so healthy… when you were a child. Think of the good old times… Now think what you are doing to YOU. Forget the stress. People stress all the time. Find another thing to relieve your from stress. I managed to stop smoking… and what was my replacement? A 2-litre bottle of water by my side all the time! The water used to make me feel so healthy, that I could never go back to nicotine.

      I have quit for about two weeks now(2 packs a day for 13 years) and at its hardest I would say it was only SLIGHTLY difficult. My cravings are gone as soon as I realize what I am missing. I recommend to anyone who is quitting to get a copy of Allen Carr’s The Easy Way to Quit Smoking
      This book is amazing!! It takes care of the mental aspect, while I am also using chantix for the physical
      part.
      Had I known it was this easy I would of quit years ago!!

      I just got done taking chantix and i have been smoke free for two months and loving everybit of it!!! i took up running again and playing sports. i for ten years one to two packs a day. i haven’t gained any weight actually i lost ten. there is a way to quit!!! try chantix i stand by it ahnd i know so many others do to!!!

      Chantix works! I used it for one month and was able to quit. I have smoke free for 15 weeks. I was at least a pack a day smoker for 11 years. I don’t really feel all that different, but I know I am different. No real cravings, just habits to break.

      I don’t smoke, but my husband just recently quit. At first I thought it was a bad idea (not to quit, but when he was going to do it) it was when we went on vacation. But it worked! He hasn’t smoked for almost 3 months and trust me I’ve been there when he tried to quit in the past and it wasn’t very nice, but going on vacation, he was free from all the everyday stress, like work, bills and etc…so it was indeed the perfect time for him to quit and I must say I never even notice that he was being cranky, so all you spouses of smokers, go on vacation!

      Witnessing my 48 yr old boyfriend have a heart attack prompted me to quit. After smoking nearly non-stop since 17, except while pregnant or nursing. I did feel sleeping and had blurry vision the first 2 days. Here it is 5 days with no smoking and it’s getting easier. Going back now would be tough ’cause I really don’t want to have to repeat the last 5 days again. Sometimes I actually felt as though I was mourning a freind. Now my pride and ability to smell and taste again is a great reason to stay quit. This time is for real, is forever.

      I quit on Sept. 17. It’s going really well, primarily because of a book I used to help me: The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. I highly recommend it.
      I can relate completely to everything that has been said about the difficulty of quitting. I know I never want to smoke again. And I never want to have a first day of quitting ever again. I want to feel like a non-smoker, not an ex-smoker.

      I have been smoking for nearly 5 years. And even though I don’t smoke a lot, just some cigarettes per day. This realy damages my health. when I sleep at night, problems of breathing arouse. I really feel sick and want to quit… I JUST want to feel like a non-smoker and touch the good smelling again.

      I agree with greg that allen carrs easy way to stop smoking helped me to change my perception about smoking and helped me to see that the cigarette I had just smoked was putting the drug in me ,the nicotine to make me want the next cigarette in an hours time,so all I had to do was not have the next cig and that would become the one I just didn’t smoke and so no more drug (nicotine) to make me want the next one.
      God helped as well!

      I just quit 5 days ago Chantix…I tried gum, patchs, Zyban. this stuff really takes the edge off I still want to smoke just not as much I am not as shacky or fuzzy as in the past and trust me on this day 5 is much easier than day 4 than day 3, etc. So I guess what I am saying is it seams to get a little bit easier each day. I read a lot about this Chantix i herd good and bad but three people I work with quit in the last few months with it so I gave it a try…So far so good.

      I started Chantix in July 07 and quit smoking after 7 days on the drug. I’m so thrilled to have quit smoking. It’s been 121 days, I don’t wheeze any more, my family is thrilled and I can’t say enough about the drug, nothing else I tried worked. I smoked for 36 years. I only took Chantix for 5 weeks and have continued to not smoke. I will never go back ~ never. Couldn’t have done it without this drug. I do belong to the Chantix support email program and check in daily and now twice a week.

      chantix works. on day 9 i smoked like crazy in the morning but since then i just quit. no craving, no craze, a little irritable and insomnia. but what the heck, i dont smell and i plan to go back to the gym. great chart by the way…

      I’ve just read Allen Carr’s “Easy Way To Stop Smoking”, and I am happy to say that I will never smoke again. It took me less than a day to read the it and only a few minutes to quit. This book is the best way to stop smoking. Very easy and no effort. Please try.

      I have been a non smoker for 18 days now. I have had my ups and downs, mainly in the first week, but it is getting easier. I have been using the gum when I felt a diffiult patch. I was a 20 a day smoker for more than 20 years and really enjoyed smoking, but after the loss of a family member to lung cancer I was shocked into taking action. I had tried many times in the past to give up, but always gave in within a few days, so I didn’t expect this time to be any different. I find when I have a bad patch, I do a bit of exercise, this motivates me to continue, as I found it almost impossible to exercise whilst smoking, so I see immediately the benefits of giving up. Its all about changing the routines we associate with smoking. I always enjoyed my first cigarette of the day with a cup of tea, now I get up and drink a glass of OJ and don’t miss that cigarette. Its all about having a plan of action for when those cravings hit you and not giving in.

      I didn’t smoke until I was out of high school. Should of never started but I did cause it was cool. After 35 years and 3 packs a day I decided to quit. All I can say is JUST DO IT. It is now a year later and if your mind say’s no your body will follow. Good Luck take a deep breath and just do it.

      I tried Chantix,it made me feel weird,made me feel restless at night,and hard to go bathroom for days.Now trying the patch,been four days now,hacking up all the mucus,blowing out all te snot from my nasal passages,snooking up all the slime in my brain and spitting it out again,I guess my body is rejecting all the damage from smoking.

      Gave all my smokes and green to a friend. He gave me some white back. I have absolutely NO URGE TO SMOKE. I don’t want anything more foreign in my chest.

      Just wondering if anybody else might think the same, but in a packet of cigarettes every so often you find one or so, that has a particular _intense_ smell or taste? Like a _hook_ type gimmick?

      I started smoking when I was 16 years old. For 45 years now I have smoked 1-2 packs a day. I am a Registered Nurse and have cared for patients in the terminal stages of lung cancer. I have suctioned patients and have seen lung tissue in the suctioned material and yet with my experiences and knowledge I have been powerless to stop the habit. Even vanity,guilt and concern from loved ones could not help. I have tried many times and have used gum,patches,Zyban,nicotine inhalers and cold turkey with no success. I had even tried the new medication Chantix. It gave me such horrible headaches and nausea I stopped using it. Three weeks ago I deceided to give Chantix another try. I consulted with the physician I work with and she told me to take the medication only as directed and to set the stop date and do not smoke even one cig after that time. This was my mistake the first time I tried it. I would continue to smoke 1-2 cigarettes a day and that was what caused the headaces and nausea. I have been nicotine free for three weeks. I can breath, I no longer have to use albuteral and Advair inhalers, I can walk for more then a block,I don’t cough,my blood pressure is back to 128/74, I smell good,my sense of taste has returned,I probably wont have to carry around an oxygen bottle, and hopefully the wrinkles will slow down. If I can quit anybody can. Good luck to everyone who tries. Remember even if you try and fail the next time just might be the time you suceed.Your health is your most valuable asset because without it everything in your life becomes more difficult.

      That is wonderful Becky. I am very similar to you, started at a very young age and smoked for 35 years. I never-never-never thought I could be successful at quiting smoking but Chantix gave me the power to quit. I only used it for one month and I’m 32 weeks, 2 days and 22 hours being nicotine frree. I have saved 4 weeks of my life. I can breathe, walk and feel the monkey off my back. It is such a wonderful feeling! I couldn’t have done it without Chantix.

      day 2 almost done. yay me…..I also read Allen Carr’s book. A few times. It all makes sense, of course, but I still viewed it as ‘a sacrifice’ when I had my last cig. It’s so easy to just have one more. Like he says, it’s never one that kills you. Anyway, circled Feb 15 on the calender a few weeks ago; made sure I smoked as much as I wanted up to that date- no guilt- then woke up clean. Euphoric at times, depressing at times. Mostly euphoric though. So nice not to have to hide the stench and constantly think about death whilst puffing one back…..

      i guess you can say something good has come out of my self by comming down with flu going into pneonmonia its a month now and no cravings did so much coughing i told myself id never have another ciggetette i can smell alot better still getting over the breathing pain , but i guess it was a mesege given to me to stop smokeing ,

      Well it’s been 20 days today, woohoo for me!! I smoked for 39 yrs @ 3 1/2 to 4 packs a day. So you know quitting for me was/is hard. I’m on the Patch, that’s the only way I can do it. I’ve tried like most people and failed many times. This time though it’s different. I’m doing it for ME, no one else, but ME. Before I would try to quit because of family/spouse pressure, but I wasn’t ready to quit yet. Now I am and I feel much better!!!

      Remember, it’s NOT going to work if you’re doing it for someone else, it has to be YOU that wants to quit. And you have to stick with it, no matter what!! I’m still getting the cravings and I also still catch myself reaching for the pack. Those are just habits that I need to stop. In time it will all be over and I will be smoke free once again after 39 yrs……… Good Luck to everyone who is trying and congrats to all of you that have kicked the habit for a year or more!!!

      Oh I forgot to ask in my last comment, has anyone else noticed unusualy strong odors when you go to the toilet? (sorry, I didn’t know how to put it, lol) I’ve noticed some pretty strong odors from my urine and bowles. More than normal smells, kind of like an “out-house” odor. Someone said it’s the Poisons and Toxins leaving your body. Has anyone else heard of this or had this condition? Some days it’s stronger than others, and NO it’s not from the foods I’m eating. I haven’t changed my eating habits. I appreciate any comments or experiences in this area.

      Hello,I am on day 13 of Chantix and have not had a cigarette in 5 days. I am 39 and had smoked since I was 14 yrs old. There for the last few years, I was up to 2 pks a day and even more if I went out drinking. I am very fortunate in the fact that I have not had any of the side effects I hear everyone talk about. I have gained a few pounds and am still not comfortable going out in the real world other then work until I know I am done with the cigarettes. I am also thinking I will only take the Chantix for 30 day. I am hoping to be able to go out and start jogging again and lose some weight. I wonder how long it takes the lungs to be healthy enough for me to do that?

      I hve now done 90 days without a cigarette. I started off with the patches, and although they worked, I still had strong cravings. I decided to give the gum a go, and it has worked a treat.

      My cravings are very few and far between now. I feel great, the only downside is that I have gained a stone in weight, but I can work at bringing that back down.
      I won’t be going back to smoking now.
      It is considered so anti social these days to smoke and there is nowhere other than outside that a person can smoke, I think this has helped me though, knowing I can’t smoke and not having to smell tobacco everywhere I go.

      i am a non smoker now thanks to chantix,i quit nov. 19, 07. i have never felt better, i used the treatment as it said to do, and im smoke free. patti, north carolina this is the greatest medicine ever, its a miracle.

      i too am on day 5 without a fag and on day 16 of taking champix as they call it in the uk i was a 30 a day smoker and had also tried all of the other methods available, i never thought that champix would really be any different, but hey no real mood swings which i am sure my husband is greatful, i think this drug is a miracle cure my only worry is coming off champix and then returning to ciggies

      I am on day 267 and had no problems after coming off the drug. I only took it for 6 weeks. I have no desire to smoke which is a miracle. I smoked for 30+ years. I never had any mood swings. I still smile, get chills and a tear in my eye every time I think that I DID IT and I’M A NON SMOKER!

      i am now going into my second week smoke free!!!! I have tried everything in the past to quit and finally chantix is what has helped…i smoked a pack a day for the past 35 years and smoked while taking the chantix for the first month but little by little i wantyed the cigs less and less while taking the pill….after the first month i just quit buying and wanting cigs…than after another 2 weeks of the pill i just stopped taking them and havent wanted or needed either since. Best of luck to anyone goin thru this it is hard but chantix has helped me and talking with others going thru this who understand has helped

      This is an awesome graph! Great job on making it. I just have one question though (sorry if it was answered somewhere previously, I was not able to find it):

      What stats do we have on the person who smoked? I mean are these figures based on someone who has smoked one pack a day for lets say 5 years? So in that sense, if someone smoked for 5 years, it will take 15 years before everything goes back to normal.

      Or is it one pack a day for 10 years? 2 years? 2 packs a day maybe?

      I am curious as to what variables were put in place while comming up with those time lines.

      I am no expert but I think there is variability with how long and how much and what miligram of nicotine you have had before those things above can be taken into account.

      Is their anybody out there who stopped taking champix half way through the course? I have been smoke free for two months, but this medication is making me crazy. Also I still have cravings mentally for the cigs!!!

      i thought i was doing really well on champix i have been smoke free for 6 weeks but this last week has been really difficult i am still taking the champix but i dont know if i am getting immune to it or what but my cravings are going through the roof at the moment and yet for the previous 5 weeks they were virtually none existant so what happens when the course of tablets ends to be honest i am dreading it

      I can relate to so many of you and your stories. All your comments have been helpful to me so thank you for putting them here. I’m hoping my own story may help someone else too.

      Like Becky I’ve been a nurse for a long time, smoked even longer, and have seen way too much of the nasty damage from cigarettes yet I still continued to smoke 1-2 ppd. Like her and so many of you, I tried every thing (including the books, patches, gum, inhaler) more times than I want to tell. I’ve spent lots of money on prescriptions and OTC stuff that promised to help break my nasty addiction. Today I can honestly say that Chantix helped me more than anything I’ve ever tried before. My quit date was one month ago and I’m doing good. I won’t stop the Chantix too soon for fear I’ll have a set back. My doctor advised one month with the starter pack followed by a 4 month twice daily regimen. When I asked if I’d really need it that long, he said he’d advise no less than 3 months follow up after quitting in order to help ensure no return to smoking. Like many of you, this hasn’t been easy, but Chantix is doing most of the work for me and has made quitting this time ten times easier than ever before. And I can truthfully say that I believe this is the last time I’ll ever have to quit smoking. This time is for real.

      Since starting Chantix I’ve had a few events of sleeplessness and nausea plus some hard cravings and a couple of strangely detailed dreams, but my doctor talked to me beforehand to tell me how the drug worked and to warn me that if those things happened they would soon go away. They did. So did the cigarettes!

      For ROK (above) who commented on smells… Everyone who stops smoking notices stronger smells right away. The reason is because when we first stop smoking, our olfactory senses are one of the first things to start returning and so we are able to smell things much better now that we have stopped. Have you noticed other smells are stronger too? For instance, notice how much more pleasing the subtleness of an herbal tea smells now that you can smell again. The aroma of a grilled steak, a fragrant flower, your home when you return after being gone a few hours. I opened my purse one day and was bowled over by the strong offensive smell of tobacco although there hadn’t been any cigarettes in there for days. That’s when I realized, things don’t smell differently now, it’s just that we quitters can sense all smells more fully now, the way that others do, and the way that we used to, before we ever started smoking. If my purse smelled that bad, I could only imagine how I must have smelled while I was smoking. Just think of all the abuse we’ve put our bodies through -seen and unseen- by smoking.

      Here’s a list of the things I can readily see have changed, after a month of not smoking:

      My taste buds have returned and food tastes better.
      I can think more clearly.
      My complexion is clearer.
      My hair stays cleaner longer.
      My teeth already appear whiter.
      My nails appear pinker.
      My car interior smells like leather again.
      My home does not smell stale anymore.
      My closet smells fresher.
      I have a lot more energy now.
      My chest no longer hurts first thing in the morning.
      My sinuses don’t act up every day.
      I no longer cough up stuff regularly.
      I don’t get nervous anymore.
      I love life and appreciate nature more fully.
      My home and car windows stay clean longer.
      I can take a deep breath and let it all the way out without coughing.

      Here’s an odd one I haven’t got an answer for:
      When I first began Chantix, within 3 or 4 days I noticed my craving for coffee totally went away. I used to dearly LOVE coffee and would have a morning cup, an afternoon pick me up cup, and sometimes an after dinner cup. No more. I can no longer stand the smell nor taste of coffee. It nauseates me now. Has anyone else noticed a similar experience with coffee or something else they formerly liked?

      The day my doctor wrote the Rx, he commented to me that while the overall success rate for Chantix was good, it didn’t have a 100% success rate. However, every patient he’d given the prescription to had quit – and remained quit as far as he knew. Now THAT’S pressure! I told myself right then that I wasn’t going to be his first patient to fail.

      Tips from me to you:
      In the beginning when the urges to smoke came, I’d tell myself this too will pass, and then I’d do deep breathing while envisioning healthy air filling my lungs to make them pink again.

      Being consciously present in the moment, a form of meditation, helps me forget smoking. Recommendation: Eckhart Tolle’s “A New Earth”.

      At the end of my first and second week I went for an hour of massage at Massage Envy (most states have them). It helped me with relaxation and helped flush my cells. It was a little costly, but so worth it to have a professional massage when I needed it the most.

      I’ve started exercising again and today I’m starting a walking program. Along with stopping smoking and getting generally healthier, I want to include all aspects of improvement and will include healthy eating as well.

      I have been smoke free for seven week’s after
      36 yrs of a packet a day habit,I still cannot
      believe that i ever fell in to the filthy habit of
      puffing on a cigeratte,as my childhood was filled with my mother,father,grandmother every body,i remember the foul stench,and the cig buts was enough to put you of. When i turned 20 yrs old,my first husband died and left me with a four month old baby,instead of having therapy, i started smoking.At the very start of 2008 i was determend to stop smoking. Im wondering if any one is experiencing withdrawl symtems
      like leg pain feels a bit wierd

      I have just recently quit and am finding the withdrawls hard to take. But, I am not giving up.

      I am also using the patch but, it has some annoying side affects as well. I would prefere to use a more natural approach instead of using these things which are exspensive. And yes I have heard people say well how much do you spend on Cigs each mo.

      I am wondering what other kinds of techniques are there that would be most effective at helping these out of controll urges?

      Any advice would be most appreciated.

      I think youre better off with no nicotine in chewing gum or patches as it is still giving you the craving for the next cigarette!.
      Stop the nicotine and you will have no major symptoms of withdrawal after 24-48 hours and in that time keep remembering your escaping from a drug that you dont need!

      What a great place!
      Smoked for 40+ years, 1-1.5 packs/day, quit many times, longest 4 months. Tried everything out there. Strangely enough the anti depression drug wellbutron worked well. Quit July 4th, 2008 taking Chantex. (Took it in May and again in June also but went back to smoking.) It is now working wonderfully and I can finally breathe again. Not taking Chantex now, just on wellbutron for angsiety and it also helps me stay calm. Will be off this next week. Going on 4 months and feeling great! Could not have done this without Chantex. Also stopped drinking coffee at first. Now only have 1 cup in the AM. Used to wait till I had coffee in the morning before I would have a Cig. Now my teeth are allmost white again!
      Don’t give up! The great thing about Chantex is you are not putting nicotine in your body and if you do mess up and have a cig or two it’s OK. You just try it again, and eventually it WILL WORK! Good luck to everyone out there. Bob

      It has been 29 hours without smoking, me to have tried everything on the counter, then I started in Canada called Champix, which is Chantex in the U.S. It really works the feeling you get after eating is gone I only have to deal with the habit, the what to do after eating.  usually I would smoke, but now I go for a walk around the block, today I got into the halloween candies, and ate too much for dinner, so I told my husband that I needed at least three rounds around the block and after the second round my stomach started to feel better, less stuffed and more relaxed.  I too have noticed that coffee does not smell and taste as good as it use to.  I hope I can make it to 48 hours.congrats to everyone who quit and hang in there for the beginners.Catherine Ottawa Ontario

      I have been smoking for 10 years and It has been 3 days since i stopped smoking..this is the first time I have tried to give up. I decied that I would go cold turkey and the effects have been amazing..yesterday I cleaned the house in 10mins.. before it would of taken me over a hour.. oxygen levels are back to normal and Im glad lol… my smell and taste has come back to normal..I urge anyone whos comtemplating on giving upDO IT..its worth it.. the benefits out weigh the effects of that feeling when you light up and inhale 4000 different chemicals..

      I have been smoke free for 14 days after 22 years of 1-2ppd. I have tried to quit smoking before with no success. First time was about 2 years ago on a cruise and I did well until I got home.

      This time I quit when I moved. Both times I found it easiest to quit when there was a change in my daily routine to help break the habit. I was going to use the gum and at the time had a sore throat and found that it added a tickle so each time I went for a piece of gum I decided to go for a Halls throat drop instead. I tried to stay fully aware that the nicotine would be out of my system if I could just get through the first 3 days.

      As far as the leg pains mentioned above, I have had those as well. I am borderline overweight and when I was pregnant with my son, I had problems with restless leg syndrome. Occassionally when I have gained weight, I have noticed the same problems but they go away when I lose the weight. I have not stepped on a scale lately but thought that maybe I had gained that extra 5 pounds that seems to cause those problems. Maybe it is just the restlessness that is part of the withdrawal symptoms. Either way I am working on the diet and excercise but am glad to finally be free of the addiction.

      I have not smoked for 12 DAYS!!! I have been taking Chantix and am AMAZED at how well it works. I started smoking at 15 and smoked for 36 years. I smoked a pack a day-sometimes more. Over the last twenty years I tried to stop many times-patch-gum-hypnosis-acupuncture-cold turkey-etc. I’ve gained some weight with Chantix (not worried-that will come off) due to a slight increase in appetite, and like some, the coffee I used to enjoy is no longer appealing, I now prefer tea. What I find interesting here is the way people who have used Chantix describe the ease of not smoking and having to deal with the “habit” of smoking. I understand. For me, it was strange to realize that most of my smoking was a response to something else. Get up in the morning-have a cigarette. Cup of coffee-have a cigarette. Finish a meal-have a cigarette. Get in the car-have a cigarette. Over the years I had trained myself to reach for a cigarette on cue. I’m feeling no desire to smoke. I am tremendously grateful for this medication. I truly believe I would not have been able to quit otherwise. I recommend Chantix to anyone wanting to quit smoking.

      I quit smoking in 1975 whilst serving in the Army. That lasted 11 years and then inexplicably I started again when I left the Army in 1986. Now 22 years later I have stopped again…only been 5 days so far but I feel a million times better already. I just used will power but it is really hard especially more so this time (I think). I keep thinking of the £150.00 per month I am going to save and that keeps me on track.

      I used to smoke for 7 years since i was 17 years old.My advice is cold turkey the only realistic way,cause it will come a time for you to deal with the effects of nicorette,patch etc.I had legs pain for two days,very nervous for one week,and now im in my second week without smoking.For a 1 pack and half per day,it hard to deal with cold turkey,but its something that really will help you for your life in the future.

      I smoked for 31 years aand on average 1 pack a day. I gave gone cold turkey, but do have an nicorette inhaler, into which I put one cartridge aday. It keeps my fingers busy and when i get close to wanting a smoke out it comes and it helps. After 31 years of smoking, 5days and not one smoke.

      Smoked since before birth, my dad was a chain smoker of sorts and mother smoked too. I took up first hand smoke at age 12 and have smoked for at least 33 years, 1 pack a day minimum. I have tried several methods incl. chantix and welbutrin – just did not work for me. With chantix, I actually doubled my regular daily dose of cigarettes, so I quit chantix quickly.

      Effective the 1st of the new year, I went cold turkey. Threw away all of the smoking paraphenalia, including anything that is associated to cigarettes and smoking just to eliminate any triggers. The first 2 days were spent in bed, the only reason for getting out of bed were to eat, drink and use the bathroom.

      I’ve been smoke free for 2 weeks now – I realize the withdrawal symptoms are my cells healing from the hurt I put them through via smoking and I realize that I must experience the withdrawal symptoms in order to heal. I do desire cigarettes occasionally and I catch myself. I remind myself that if I smoked a cigarette now I could make the healing symptom go away but it will return again requiring me to smoke more to be suppressed. I am not willing to around in circles with this most dangerous habit! I am not giving in even when I cry out of frustration (which is happening less often now), I know why I am crying and I tell myself that I am healing and this is part of the healing process.

      Hi,I am in Autstralia and we call it Champix – I am 45 ,started smoking when i was 19,also a pack a day – my wife and I both stopped with Champix last year for 9 weeks,no problem – then we started again,due to being moody etc and taking it out on the kids.So this time I am stopping as well,into my 3′rd day now and going strong..I found it is good to stay away from other friends that smoke,parties,socialising etc.I also stopped drinking my morning coffee and switched to tea -I agree,this medication is top class,but your mind needs to be in control..

      Obviously one of the first steps that you will need to take is to remove all possibilities of having access to cigarettes from the day you start your program. You need to get rid of all the cigarettes you have in your possession. Many people like to retain one pack of cigarettes as something to fall back on ‘just in case they need one’ but this is setting yourself up for failure before you start

      Im 21 and been smoking for 4-5 years. It helped me get through some things that I would have had a lot more trouble with otherwise. I just got my wisdom teeth out 6 days ago and haven’t been able to smoke as there are open wounds in my mouth. I knew before hand that it was going to be a difficult situation to get through but the vicodin they gave me helped. What really sucks now is that Im moving into a house with some friends that all smoke like its their job(not to mention my prescription just ran out). I wasn’t sure if I necessarily wanted to quit just now, but I feel like I already made it this far(its far for me) and I really should just quit. Im aware of all the benefits but Im worried that Ill slide back into smoking soon and won’t quit until I have a serious disease and its too late.

      its been 8 days since ive smoked a cig. ive been a smoker for over ten years and ive stopped a few times along the way, but ive never been able to make it last. I turn 30 this month and I feel old. I owe it to myself and my family to quit before its too late. I feel the phys effects of smoking all the time…..winded, coughing, high bld pressure, stinky, $$. But the worst part is (and it really makes me sick) is that if I continue, I will be an old man looking back on my adult life with regret……regret that I was so selfish and weak that i couldnt just man-up and quit cigarettes altogether. I hate druggies, theives, lazy people, and junkies……but im starting to realize that ive been a junkie to Phillip Morris for ten years!!…A selfish coward that has become the very thing that i despise. ITS MY TIME NOW!!!! Im proud of my first week, and im looking forawrd to my clean/smoke-free future.

Having worked with many people quitting smoking via hypnotherapy, its a very individual process – in part influenced by the reasons why someone smokes (which can be very entrenched) and also by how badly they want to quit.

      For many people hypnotherapy can really help them – its a tough challenge and you need all the help you can get.

      I have not smoked for 7 days! One week today! I have smoked at least 1 to 1.5 packs a day for over 30 years. Never tried to stop before. Decided to stop cold turkey and so far so good. I haven’t had coffee either.. have to change the routine of getting up, drinking coffee, smoking a cigarette, etc. The worst time it bothers me is when I come home from work and I let the dogs out and I always go outside and sit with them and smoke.. That has been the worst time.. really want to sit out on the patio and relax and smoke! But it’s getting easier.. one day at at time. I printed out the stats on what happens when you stop smoking and put it on the refrigerator. I’m drinking lots of hot teas and enjoying experimenting with the different kinds. Whatever works!

      Today is the day I realize I need to stop smoking, I do believe it is mind controlling. I will 29 this month and been smoking since I was 23. I notice the change in my breathing, how I feel when I conceive a cold, my face color is slightly different from all the toxins. I want myself back and dont know how I picked up such a nasty habit. I dont want any med’s to help me, Im going to give my body what it deserves. A friend suggested walking or running, he stated it somehow pushes you away from smoking. Im one of those people who believe that everything you take in thats bad for your body will one day damage your body or possibly lead to death. Im going to take it one day at a time, and will keep in mind thats its for the better. Faith will see me thru.

      Firstly, a huge thank you to all those who have posted so far describing your experiences of quitting this dreadful habit of smoking.
      Two weeks ago and at the age of 54, I collapsed in the early hours one morning when getting out of bed to use the toilet. The result was a rather large boiled egg on the back of my head from having struck the door architrave on the way down. Today, extensive blood tests have revealed high cholesterol levels and the fact that I have smoked since the age of 18 or so, does not help.
      Reading how others have coped whilst trying to stop smoking is a huge help and also a great incentive to do the same. Now is the time for some mental re-arrangement upstairs and then I’m taking the leap and jumping on the same bandwagon as you lot, with the intention of quitting for good.

I stopped cold turkey because I don’t want any nictine in my system. When it was gone it was gone. I have a friend who quit and inspired mr to do the same. I also want to set a good example for my children. I liked the chart alot because I wantedto know how I was helping my body right now. I think it makes it easier to not want a cigarette if you know how much you have already helped your body. I really hope I can stick with it because I know how easy it would be for me to just start again. That is what scares me.

      I’ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend – NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
      Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.

      I quit 7 weeks ago now using patches, it was hard in the first 2 weeks but after that day by day it got easier and easier. For the past week I havent even thought about cigarettes and I’m reaping the benefits of the money I have saved. One tip for people struggling is getting plenty of sleep as it makes the day go quicker and will eliminate some of the irritating feeling you have. Good luck!

      I gave up smoking 7 days ago..I just decided enough was enough.I had been smoking for ten years,only really used to smoke about ten a day,i have nicotine tablets i can take if i need them but only take about 2 a day..Its all in the mind i think..I was even out in the pub with my friends and did’nt want one..The key is mind over matter!!..If you tell yourself you’re a non-smoker believe me it will work..Good luck to everyone who is thinking of quitting.

      After smoking for just about 3 years, I had my last cigarette at 8pm on Monday, February 15th. I decided to quit cold turkey and surprisingly haven’t been experiencing extreme withdrawal symptoms. I’ve seen friends, who arguably smoked much more and for much longer than I experience physically debilitating withdrawal but not me.
      What I have been experiencing is waking up earlier, without the need of an alarm clock, feeling significantly more refreshed than I ever have in a long time. I am experiencing occasional tightness in the chest and a feeling like I can only take 90% of a deep breath on occasion but that seems to be a common side effect of quitting from what I’ve read in numerous forums. I haven’t really had cravings per se but I’ve been taking extra hot showers as one alternative because I like how much more clean I really feel after one now. It’s true that your sense of smell returns, like smelling your shampoo long after you get out of the shower. At night, I’ve been drinking Sleepytime Extra tea to help unwind as well.
      Also, I’ve been avoiding my morning espresso routine because I always used to smoke when I had my morning coffee and I find now that I really don’t need that extra shot of caffeine in the morning.

      I quit smoking thirteen years ago–cold turkey. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. If I can give anyone one bit of advice it is this: never take another puff of a cigarette again. I’ve seen too many people think they could handle an occasional cigarette and wind up addicted again.

      I’m never going to start again, because I know I will never try to quit again.

        I tell myself everyday I will never smoke again, as quitting was too difficult, emotional, and stressful, I can not go through that again, therefore I will not smoke. If I ever smoke again, I will never quit again, I will not smoke. I had over 40 years of smoking, and I am 57 years old. I have gain weight and hate that I substituted cigarettes for food. I have calmed down but now another long term event, taking the weight off and keeping it off.

      I quit 3 days ago with the help of a hypnotherapist – it worked! I have had very minor 1 or 2 second requests from my brain to smoke, easy to dismiss, and feel as if I have been freed from slavery! Wish I would’ve done this years ago and skipped all the cold turkey tries that failed!

      Ten months ago I quit cigarettes and started smoking one black & mild a day. Two weeks ago I quit those too. I usually bought one every time I wanted one, so I had to walk/drive to get it. Then one day I just postponed going out for one till it was time for bed, and the same every day since – and two weeks have passed! I guess I can say I’m all quit now, since I have no urge to go buy any.

        I just quit a week ago after having a heart attack . I’m 60 yrs old and smoked since i was 11. I;ve tried to quit many time and failed . This is my last chance to succeed. Even one puff will start me back again ,i know it. Don’t try the taper method if you have already stopped or you will be right back on them. Each day is getting easier. Hang in there.and you will make it. If you don’t you will have an attack too, you are the perfect candidate. Please give it a while longer, and learn from my mistakes

      Quitting is simple cold turkey is not a problem. Ask yourself are you suicidal, if you answered yes call an ambulance if you answered no, put the smoke out and toss the butts. Refuse to be around tobacco and keep yourself busy. I am on day 7 cold turkey, and the smell of cigarettes is repulsive and I have no need for one. I am also in second hand smoke a portion of my day, and have no cravings. You can quit, I didn’t find it addictive, anxiety and fatigue might be bothersome but withdrawal is barely noticeable. You can quit.

        @Laura–some of us do self-medicate. I don’t know By a person personally, so I don’t know if she’s better off mentally. Definitely better off physically, not burning her lungs, tearing up her gut or irritating the people around her with the smell.
        @By a person–give it some time to finish out the withdrawals. Your hyperness may correct itself, or you may want to look at smokeless nicotine, if you find it helps that much.

      My goal was to quit on my birthday 3 days ago. No such luck. I have been taking Chantix for a little over a week now and finally made my quit day 2 days ago. So only one day off…not too bad. I have been having some cravings and I could not even imagine doing this cold turkey. For those of you who have the ability to do that, my hat is off to you. If you truly need help, I really believe that any medication, over the counter or not, makes a huge difference. I have quit before in the past on several occasions and this by far is the best that I have felt. So I guess Chantix works for me. I have already gained some of the dreaded weight and that is by far the worst part of quitting. Does anyone have any suggestions on how NOT to gain so much weight? I am doing the exercise thing but still eating A LOT!

        This time around I have used 4mg Lozenges and im now on day 30. Longest time ever! I have found that when I want a cig im taking a lozenge instead where as before id have been taking sweets, biscuits, cakes…….
        But I do believe that a little weight gain isnt doing as much damage as the cigs would!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK

      I quit for 7 years and picked up a cigarette 3 years and ago and have been back to 1-2 packs a days. there have been some weak attempts in the last three years that lasted a max 7 days off cigarettes. This time I go in with about the same resolve as 10 years ago. Wish me luck!

        Francis, this is a tough row to hoe, but you can get through this. Stress is the worst thing that we have to deal with, but I believe in you and that you will quit for good this time. Think about your nearest and dearest and how the tobacco smoke affects them. Then think about the money you would save by not smoking and putting that towards a new computer or tablet computer or whatever lights your wick.

      3 weeks yesterday. 33 years smoking. I’m 50 all of a sudden and know that preventative is the way to go. I have told some people I have “stopped” smoking, not quit. I am taking it one day at a time. Similar to an alcoholic, you have to get by each day. Not sure how long I am going to go, but each day is a new record for me.

      I quit 2 days before Father’s day 2010. I had been smoking for about 30 years. The last couple of years I was cutting back and cutting back. I hated having to go outside in the winter or the rain in the summer. My daughter said she cried herself to sleep every night , because she was afraid that I would die before she graduated from high school. I went to a soccer practice and heard a parent tell one of the coaches about a couple that he knew who were lifelong smokers. The wife had 3-4 months left thanks to lung cancer and the husband had lost his lower jaw to cancer. That was a life changing moment. I announced to the surrounding family that I was quitting that night. I bought the patch, and never made it to step 2. I just found that I didn’t need the second stage patches.

      How bad is smoking?

      We went to a show at the Stratford Festival in Ontario and the couple in front of us went outside for a smoke break. I was astounded at how bad the smell emanating from them was. When I quietly complained to me wife, she only said “Now you know how it was for me when you were smoking.”

      I haven’t smoked since I quit. Do I feel tempted at times? I would be lying if I said no. Sometimes I think that a single puff is all that want, and then I think that puff would probably make me violently ill. They say that nicotine rewires your brain so that you only get pleasure from having a smoke, but I must admit I quite enjoy my glass of wine since I quit smoking.

        Don’t quit. Quitting is stressful. Smoking helps relieve stress. It’s a negative feedback loop. Cut down. See how long you can go without smoking a cigarette. i’m up to almost 37 years and counting. Smoking dreams are rare now. If you can make it to tomorrow, then tomorrow you can make it to the next day. Repeat.

      Muahaharr I’ve been smoking since 8th grade and I’ve never had cravings or withdrawal symptoms. Not once! I’m in college now and barely smoke more than 5 or 6 ciggs a week and I haven’t bought my own pack in I don’t know how long. I also used to smoke at least half a pack a day when I first started. Just goes to show it’s really all about will power, I can stop whenever I want and I never crave or feel terrible physically afterward, or maybe I’m just different.

        “I can stop whenever I want.” That’s the little devil on your shoulder talking. You, like me, won the genetic lottery as far as nicotine addiction goes–I have a cigar roughly once a month. If I’m under a lot of stress I’ll have one or two cigarettes that week, and then no more. But I routinely go for weeks and months with nothing.
        We are the lucky ones, that’s all. And 5 or 6 a week? That’s once a day. That’s as often as I have espresso, and I count myself quite addicted to that.

        I seriously don’t think you can compare 20years of AT LEAST a pack a day to you’re few years with a half a pack a day. And maybe you are just different, maybe even special. I’ve been smoking since before 8th grade, and now I’m 34. So over 20 years compared to 5 or 6? Plus you haven’t even had to deal with the realities of life yet. Try quitting after you’ve been a grown up for a while and had some real problems to deal with. Anyways your comments are offensive to me. Oh, and by the way, if you still smoke 5 or 6 a week, you haven’t quit, therefore you wouldn’t have any of the cravings or withdrawals. Duh. “I can stop whenever I want” Right dude. Then do it. And stop coming on here saying how easy it is. Will power. Jeez. Really?! AHHHHHH!!!

      Haven’t smoked for 5 days, already. Came on kinda sudden, got a bad case of flu and I’m feeling too awful to even think about smoking.
      Maybe, by the end of this, I won’t be a smoker anymore.
      And that’s after 2.5 years of smoking at least 30 cigarettes a day (with spikes of up to 4 packs a day, on really stressful days).

      All the people I ever loved were non-smokers and died of various cancers and heart diseases and I’ve noticed that everytime you get a story on the news about someone reaching their 100th birthday, they just happen to be smokers….no way I’m gonna quit coz I ain’t a quitter ! And anyway I’d hate to live a life of not smoking no matter how long it is coz it’ll be a miserable one….once a smoker, always a smoker…you can say you’ve given up but in reality you just stop yourself from doing that one thing that you know will make everything else allright and bearable !!!

      The key is the decision.

      It starts with your mind. When you really, truly embrace the thought, “I don’t need cigarettes to enjoy life”, that you really start the walk.

      For me it was LSD. I realized for the first time: I am separate from my body. my body protects me. Thus, if I want to survive I need to protect my body. Without my body, reality doesn’t exist. Reality not existing is scary. Thus, protect your body. Quit smoking.

      And then it was done. I smoked every day for a year until 4 weeks ago. And since I haven’t had a single craving.

      Starts with a choice.

      Quitting smoking isn’t easy and many people fail over and over but using smokeless cigarettes can be very helpful but they aren’t the full solution you still need willpower.

      Shame on the scumbags who are trying to advertise smokeless cigarettes in this of all places. If you want some real help overcoming the chemical addiction to nicotine, see a doctor and get nicotine patches. Don’t just switch to a different kind of cigarette.

      My story (summed up): 21 years of smoking, Feb 24, 2011-trip to ER for highblood pressure. EYE OPENER!!!. Started bp meds and a AWESOME drug, Chantix, the next day. i thought i had to quit cold turkey but upon “reading thedirections” as us guys seldom do. It said its ok to smoke for a week and then pick a quit date. I got as far in as 8 days with the therapy and just forgot to get my smokes off of the table in the house while i was getting into my car. that was it? that was my fight? I couldnt believe it!!! I was venturing out into the world for an unknown amount of time and didnt have a single cigarette around me! I confess, I did have a urge or two just because of habits. So after returning home tht evening, I took the remaining 6 little killers and DESTROYED THEM! I ran thru the house and dumped all the ashtrays. looked aroud for any lingering “BUTTS” and then immediately took the trash out. and 50 hours and 45 minutes latter, I am doing just fine! My sons are VERY happy that their Dad quit smoking. Thanks be to God and Chantix.

      There is 1 person I failed to mention. My fiance Angie. with her strength and confidence in me, I feel she contributed to a big part of it. She made me want to care for myself more. and in doing so I am taking charge of my life back. This is the cleanest my body has ever been Since I was 18 years old. Oh yes, I failed to mention… I was addicted to caffeine too. Good luck to all and their loved ones. I think I’ve turned this nicotine addiction into a posting my story addiction

      OMG – Day 4 is the hardest. I have two daughters and they are trying to help me by not buying me cigs (12 bucks) and making me feel guilty. It is a mind trip. I know I do not need them, and at this point, I just miss the habit. My head hurts, my shoulder hurts and I am actually starting to smell things again. I will be successful because I want to stop. But It is not an easy task. GOD Bless all of you who have quit. Stay on the path. It will serve you well.

      Hi well I am on my 4th day of not smoking. I find it easier than I thought I would as I smoked for over 21 years at 12/14 per day. I use 10 mg dose of the 16 hour patches and just keep busy. I also find when I get a bad craving such as walking to and from work or after a meal I chew regular gum foe a short while.
      Cravings dont last very long so they are just small challenges.
      I reckon now that I am 37 years old its about time I stopped smoking as I really do value my life.

      I am clean for 6 days and I have never felt better. I have more energy and can taste/smell all the wonderful things in this world. Day 3 and 4 were the hardest and in order to curb the withdrawal I purchased a pack of the Nicotine Lozenges. These really helped me.

      If I can do it, you can do it people. Stop smoking now before you regret it later!

      I started smoking in my first year of high school. My friend introduced me, and then I started smoking ganj as well. This was only 7 years ago, and I regret it almost everyday. I have quit before, and I felt so much better and was a lot happier. On monday I talk to my doctor to get the patch, because right this minute my dad is in the hospital with heart failure and a portion of his pancreas removed. I am convinced that this is from 40 years of smoking, for his sake when he gets home (and I know he will,) I will be an ex-smoker, and so will he.

      i have been smoke free for 5 weeks 2day!i started using the patches which were great but i havent used them for a week now. i decided that i was only replacing the nicotine when i really wanted to get off it. you have to be ready in your mind to quit smoking. i tried a few times before without success but i didnt really want to quit!!allen carrs book is amazing, it changes your whole outlook on smoking and was a great help. dont do it for someone else, do it for yourself. its not “cool” anymore!!!! and dont make excuses for yourself such as, everyone does it, or everything we enjoy is bad for us!!you no that a bar of chocolate or a glass of wine is a little different fom inhaling countless amounts of chemicals. if u injected what is in a cigarette into your bloodstream it WOULD kill you!!think about it!!!

      I quit 3 days ago.. cold turkey.. I woke up Sunday morning, and threw the last of my pack away. The past 2 days were horrible.. Crazy mood swings, intense anxiety, and chills/sweats. But, today, it doesn’t seem as bad. I still feel bad, but, I’m not going nuts like I have been over the past few days.

      i liked what you wrote you sound most like how i feel. i,ve been smoking for 22 years and made the decision to quit cold turkey two days ago. i miss it and the hardest for me has been when im upset. i still have my coffee it hasn’t been too big of a trigger. i also like the benifits list. its what brought me to this site. something to look forward to and keep me on track. i know im doing the right thing and feel good about my decision. still hard at times but easier than i thought it would be. thanks for your comments

      Glad to hear that after 3 days your smell and taste has come back to normal. I haven’t had a smoke in 4 days are everything still tastes and smells the same. Maybe ciggies didn’t effect my taste. I kinda feel shitty still and can’t see any benefits of giving up yet. Not about to have one, but man I miss ‘em.
