Breastfeeding Mom Kicked out of Denny’s

dennyslogo Denny’s down in Asheville, North Carolina asked a breastfeeding mom to cover herself or to go to a more private place when she was feeding her child. When she refused to leave or cover herself up and replied her rights were being violated, the staff decided to call in the local authorities.

The police stated it is a private business and they can set their rules however they saw fit. That they stood behind whatever decision.  During the interview you can see Crystal Everett, the mom that was kicked out, feeding her son and he definitely is not one that likes to sit still. So covering him was definitely not an option. There will be a demonstration at Denny’s, no news on when but I’m sure we’ll hear about it soon.

The NC Law on Breastfeeding does state that a breastfeeding mom is allowed to breastfeed in public:breastfeeding

Ҥ 14-190.9. Indecent exposure.
(B) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a woman may breast feed in any public or private location where she is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother’s breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

Here’s an issue if they try stating it was not okay:
- the video states they seated her WHILE SHE was ALREADY BREASTFEEDING. So exactly where are they drawing the line? If they did not want her inside due to her breastfeeding why let her in in the first place.

What do you think, should she have just went to the bathroom and fed her son in there? Would you have taken your baby’s bottle and fed him/her there? Or your own tray of food? (course that shows my own feelings) Yes, I’m supportive, especially since she didn’t walk in and have half her shirt off, waving her boobs about. I’m sorry they let her in, seeing she was feeding. Then because a bunch of people couldn’t stand it they booted her. Let me guess there were more people in the other crowd then this breastfeeding family, meaning the other had more money and tickets.

UPDATE: Over at BREASTFEEDING123, they’ve found the date of the future sit-in if an apology doesn’t happen.

Denny’s employees sound a little stupid to me…not all publicity is good publicity!

Recently a local council owned swimming pool here in Australia asked a woman to take her son into the toilets to breastfeed him. She refused & was told that she would have to leave immediately. She, of course, went to the local paper & a protest was organised. Over 100 breastfeeding women tured up at the pool. Once they were in the pool grounds they all started to feed their babies.

It was too far away for me to attend (about a 14 hour drive) but I would have loved to have seen the looks on the faces of the employees when over 100 women get their boobs out & start feeding their bubs!

I breasfeed in public irrespective of who is around & I refuse to use the “Parenting Rooms” in most places becasue they usually smell of dirty nappies & there is ALWYS staff from the surrounding shops using the microwave to heat their food & monopolising the sofas to eat their lunch. On only ONE occasion has someone made a negative comment & it was from another woman, about my age (early 30s) & she thought it was inappropriate to breastfeed in the food court because there were teenage boys present. I said that I am comfortable nursing in front of them & if they feel uncomfortable then maybe they should take THEIR meals into the toilets & eat there. She went bright red & left.
