Remember John Dempster? He’s a licensed (and hot) Naturopathic Doctor who practices in Toronto. This is our third conversation with the good doctor (here’s the second), who will regularly contribute to Blisstree about health and wellness issues. Find his practice here.
This week, we asked Dr. Dempster to give us the skinny on what we’re doing wrong health-wise. Got a question for our hunky naturopath? Leave it in the comments section below.
Top 10 Mistakes People Make Regarding Their Health Prior to Visiting Me:
1. Skip Breakfast
Straight up, this is the worst possible way to start your day. We need this meal to supply us with the energy, protein, and individual nutrients required to meet the daily demands of each day. Without this meal, we’re essentially operating on fumes. Many of those who skip breakfast do so in hopes that this will help them lose weight. In fact, quite the opposite happens. We need to eat a healthy breakfast in order to facilitate proper weight management and energy production, as well as mood and clarity.
2. Drink Soda
This is simply one of the biggest reasons that America has epidemic numbers of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and a host of other chronic illnesses – including various cancers. Soda (diet versions included) is a concentrated dose of multiple preservatives, dyes, artificial sweeteners, and other synthetic ingredients. If you feel that you can’t live without pop – you need help. Drop us a line at The Dempster Clinic Center for Integrated Medicine, and we’ll help you add years and quality to your life without making it painful.
3. Consume Milk and Dairy Products
“Milk – it does a body good!” Right? Wrong. If you’re like most people, you consume dairy because you’ve been told it’s a healthy choice. This is one of the biggest health myths I deal with every day in my clinic. We’re told that the only way to obtain calcium is by drinking dairy milk. Unfortunately, many people are led astray as current research demonstrates that pasteurized dairy is one of the leading causes of inflammation in our body. And inflammation is what fuels the fire of many current chronic illnesses. Here’s an important fact: We can get all the calcium we need from dark, green vegetables.
4. Use Artificial Sweeteners
The artificial sweetener industry is one filled with lies, deceit, and powerful marketing. Unfortunately, this comes at a high cost to the average consumer, some of which can result in serious side effects, illness, even death. Many of these products are powerful neurotoxins and known carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). The biggest myth curtailed by this industry is that when many of these “safe” sweeteners were studied by a neutral third party laboratory, they were found to actually contain the sugars they claim to replace.
5. Eat Processed or Refined Foods
This shouldn’t be a surprise, but refined sugars are still rampant in many daily diets consumed in North America. Affectionately known as the Standard American Diet (SAD), this plays a part, if not a major role, in a huge percentage of all chronic illness present in today’s society. Refined sugars spike insulin; so choose whole foods. Rule of thumb: If it’s packaged, sealed, or canned – let it be. And check the label for those hidden sugars.
6. Drink Caffeinated Beverages
Red Bull, Rock Star, and excessive amounts of coffee are extremely depleting to our many of our body’s nutritional reserves. Does this mean you have to deprive yourself of your precious macchiato for life? No, but there are other options that provide a kick without stimulating our stress hormones, and continuing to strip our body of essential vitamins and nutrients. If it’s the taste you can’t do without, try a non-toxic Swiss water decaf.
7. Don’t Exercise
Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill to replace this one. If you don’t use it – you lose it!
8. Go on Fad Diets
One-size-fits-all diets pop up everywhere. Problem is, we’re all unique biochemical beings, and we each have different needs. Many of these diets lack relevant science and research, and are often based on unproven fad techniques. While they may provide minor immediate results, they’ll often have a rebound effect that brings back the previous weight – and often even more pounds. Work with a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) to customize your diet, and create an easy-to-apply nutritional plan to help you lose those extra pounds and keep them off.
9. Buy Poor-Quality Supplements
All supplement companies are not equal. The biggest frustration for doctors working with nutritional products is the wide range of quality available (or lack thereof). Why buy a $20 bottle of calcium when there’s one next to it on the shelf for $10? The main reason is quality – you get what you pay for. Professional-grade supplements are often more expensive, but they’re almost always made with higher-quality ingredients, have had proper research and analysis done, and offer a therapeutic dose.
10. Self-Prescribe Supplements While on Medications
This is a very serious issue, and it happens everywhere. Since the advent of the Internet, never before have we been able to instantly access such an enormous amount of information. As a result, more and more people research their health issues and turn to nutritional and natural methods. Simultaneously, a huge number of North American residents take pharmaceutical meds. While nutritional supplements are extremely safe when used properly, there always exists a potential for interaction with any pharma drug. Naturopathic Doctors are extensively trained in both clinical nutrition and pharmacology. Today, this is more imperative than ever before in order to screen for potentially serious interactions.
