Walmart is pulling all Miley Cyrus jewelry from its shelves, they announced Wednesday, due to dangerous levels of the toxic metal cadmium. The “Hannah Montana” singer-actress designed a line of jewelry exclusively for Walmart with the help of designer Max Azria, and according to the Portland Press Herald, the company actually knew about the high cadmium levels as early as February.
Though cadmium isn’t dangerous when simply worn in jewelry, it’s extremely dangerous when ingested. Though most of us don’t eat our jewelry, the danger of Cyrus’ younger fans nibbling on their necklaces and bracelets is a huge risk. Walmart recently began requiring companies to prove a low cadmium content in all children’s jewelry, but the Miley Cyrus line was created before their safety policies were implemented.
