You know that cranky feeling you get after you eat a Snickers? Your head hurts, you feel gross, and you may even get a little snappy. Well, the sugar crash that makes us adults a little crabby in the afternoon turns out to have even greater effects on kids, and a high school principal in Appleton, Wisconsin, changed up her students’ nutrition to cut down on crime in her school.
LuAnn Coenen took out all of the junk food and soda from her school, replacing it with fresh fruits, vegetables, and water. As the junk food vanished, so did vandalism, litter, and student crime. The high-schoolers were much calmer and more focused on school work.
So we wonder: Why aren’t more parents and school districts learning about this and taking action? It’s such a simple change, and they would cut down on money to pay security guards, tutors, and detention monitors — not to mention the people who scrub the graffiti off of lockers.
