Is Coconut Water the Best Way to Hydrate?

You know how we feel about sugary sports drinks. But plenty of hardcore athletes and health enthusiasts are turning to coconut water as their workout beverage because of its rehydrating properties. Coconut water is low in calories and fat, and high in potassium (an electrolyte). And according to the coconut water manufacturer O.N.E., it’s also a natural Viagra, and can prevent kidney stones, which is more than we can say about Gatorade.

But Liz Applegate, director of sports nutrition at UC-Davis, believes that coconut water is only good for short workouts, because it contains lots of potassium, but not much sodium. Sports drinks contain the opposite — lots of sodium, very little potassium. When you sweat, you lose a lot more sodium than potassium, so you need to replace the sodium when you work out for a long time.

      I don’t know enough about coconut water to say one way or the other. but I can tell you that hydration certainly affects your happiness as an endurance runner or walker.
