Whether you’ve already got kids or don’t want kids at all, getting sterilized is a pretty big commitment (and for women, one that isn’t surgically simple). Our friends over at Grist pointed our attention towards the below clip from The Tyra Show, in which Tyra Banks quizzes Tracy and Jordan, a childless couple who sought sterilization in their twenties, about their decision not to have children.
Tracy tells Tyra that she knew from a young age that she never wanted to have children, but that she couldn’t find a doctor willing to give her a tubal ligation in her twenties or even in her thirties. Instead, her husband got a vasectomy, but he also reports difficulty finding doctors willing to operate given his age (he was 27 at the time). Both said doctors were unwilling to perform sterilization because they were young and childless, fearing that they would change their minds, but Tracy and Jordan say they’d rather regret their decision not to have kids than the other way around (kids aren’t something you can take back to Bloomingdale’s, Tracy says). They say they’d be happy to adopt children if they ever decided that they do, in fact, want kids.
If you feel that kids just aren’t in your cards, we want to know: Would you get your tubes tied/get a vasectomy? Take our poll:
