Four Loko Removes Caffeine, Just In Time for FDA Ban

This morning, the FDA sent letters to four different companies (Phusion Projects, the makers of Four Loko, included), warning them that their alcoholic energy drinks weren’t safe and can’t be sold anymore. No one is surprised by this move — not even the makers of Four Loko themselves. Yesterday, in a preemptive move, Phusion Projects announced that they would be removing caffeine, taurine, and guarana from the disaster drink. But they still don’t think that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is dangerous. What, deaths and hospitalizations aren’t enough?

Guarana, caffeine, taurine, and alcohol put the four in Four Loko.  Guarana seeds have twice the caffeine of coffee beans, and taurine is an acid found in bile (delicious!) that’s been linked to improved athletic performance. Because, obviously, the best time to perfect your jump shot is while you’re swigging booze from 7-11. Will Four Loko re-brand after the new, caffeine-free version is released? One Loko just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
