Cold and flu season herald big sales for cough syrup and sore throat lozenges, but it turns out that green tea could be just as good a solution. The antioxidants in green tea are a natural immune-booster, and there are plenty of other solutions that don’t involve a prescription or trip to the pharmacy at all. Yahoo!’s Shine compiled a list of the most effective ways to fight a cold, and here’s our synopsis of what really works:
-Green Tea: Its antioxidants boost your immune system, and it also contains polyphenols called catechins, which studies suggest can fight the influenza virus.
-Vitamin D: Most daily recommended intakes for vitamin D are only made with bone health in mind, but studies show that children who take extra vitamin D are 40% less likely to contract the common flu. Take a little more than is recommended for immune benefits.
-Probiotics: The “good” bacteria found in yogurt and kefir are not only good for easing stomach troubles, but they also awaken the body’s defense system.
-Soluble Fiber: In one study, mice who ate a diet rich in soluble fiber recovered from bacterial infections twice as quickly as mice on a low-fiber diet. Add fiber to your diet, just make sure it’s the soluble kind (found in citrus fruits, apples, carrots, beans, and oatmeal).
