Most of us are quick to dismiss medical advice that doesn’t come from a qualified professional, or isn’t backed up by scientific evidence (thank you, researchers, for proving that chicken soup is really good for a cold). But when celebrities spout about their favorite foods, diets, exercise moves, and beauty products, they get more attention than even Dr. Oz. (Just check out the most popular posts on our site and every other health and wellness site — even if we don’t really buy Gwyneth’s GOOP, we sure love to read about it.)
The Frisky‘s recent gallery, “10 Celebs Who Fancy Themselves Doctors,” gives us a little walk down memory lane of all the health advice we’ve been eating up from people totally unqualified to give it: Gisele Bunchen’s sunscreen condemnation; Tom Cruise’s shameless lectures on post-partum depression; Suzanne Sommers’ recent memoir about her battle with cancer. Most of the medical advice they’re shilling makes us laugh, in retrospect, but then it also seems like no one can stop talking about Jennifer Aniston’s yoga routine, either.
Why do we continue heeding the advice of people who a) are unqualified, b) we’ve never met before, and c) we know lead lifestyles that bear next to no similarities with our own? Such is the power of fame and beauty. Where there’s success, there are millions of people trying to get in on the spoils, and it’s no different when it comes to health. Unfortunately, our culture is so obsessed with outer appearances that we’ve basically forgotten the difference between health and beauty. Logically, most of us agree that just because someone is thin doesn’t mean they’re healthy, but we still prefer to get diet advice from slim authors; exercise tips from thin, chiseled trainers; beauty tips from someone who clearly has a little genetic boost on their side.
So even if you laugh at celebrities like Gisele Bundchen for saying that sunscreen is toxic, be honest: Would you be more likely follow your doctor’s orders if she looked like a supermodel or actress? Take our poll:
