This week The Globe and Mail is reporting on an alarming issue that many researchers have dubbed the “Desperate Housewives syndrome,” where middle-aged women face increasing pressure to look slender and youthful despite years of childbearing, and hormonal changes due to menopause. Funny how puberty, the one awkward stage in our lives that we can’t wait to move beyond, is now where many women take their cues on physical attractiveness.
The “Desperate Housewives” moniker refers to the “influence of the hit TV series, in which improbably thin women in their 40s prance around in short shorts,” writes Adriana Barton. Astutely put, I say. Of course there’s always that subset of women who are naturally thin, but why on earth would the rest of us want to look prepubescent in our 40s? It’s okay to not have the body you had at 15, and you know why? Because you have the rocking body of an adult woman, with lips, hips, and fingertips.
In fact, a survey by “meat firm” Mattessons found that 80% of UK ladies prefer to have curves instead of waif-like figures. The desire for a bit of meat on the bones (see what I did there?) has been inspired by 1950s silhouettes and the recent surge in sales in bottom implants.
And so, as a reminder of how good curves can look, here’s a gallery of my favorite curvy ladies at the moment. Just look at these curvy celebs who have been embracing their womanly goodies, eschewing the idea that they need the Eva-Longoria-look.
