Know what tomorrow is? Yep, you guessed it – it’s Go Skateboarding Day!
Now in its ninth year, Go Skateboarding Day celebrates the longest day of the year by holding events all over the world with a series of fundraisers, contests, protests and demos. In fact, last year there were over 500 events and thousands of skateboarders riding to inspire others and raise awareness about the goodness of this extreme sport. Participants ranged from pros to newbies, groups to individuals, kids to adults, and males to, yes, females.
According to the website of our four-wheeling friends, they have a mission we can definitely get up on:
Every year on June 21, skateboarders around the globe celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of one of the most influential activities in the world by blowing off all other obligations to go skateboarding.
Now before you stop reading and click down to the story about poop burgers, you should know that skateboarding is not just for the grungy teens, the generation X-ers and the long-haired freaky people. It’s for you, too, ladies!
Even if you’re not maneuvering some super-cool tricks, you can still get a kick-ass workout. Skateboarding will give you an awesome cardio challenge while strengthening your quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves and core. Not to mention the positive impact it will have on your balance, coordination and flexibility. Studies have even shown that skateboarders have better self-esteem than their less active peers, and we could all use a little feel-good boost from time to time, right?
If you’ve never tried skateboarding, trust me, it’s harder than it looks. I found that out in about one millisecond when I decided to hop on my son’s board and prove that I, too, could master this. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty and hopefully none of the neighbors were gawking out their windows like they tend to do. I did manage to move (although anything other than a straight line required getting off and re-adjusting the direction of board with my hands). Kook, I know. But it’s all in the trying, right?
So how about it? Will you be riding tomorrow? (Even up and down your driveway counts!)
To get you psyched, here is a video from last year’s Supergirl Jam in Venice, California where women competed in skateboarding, snowboarding and skating:
