Sometimes when you’re on the road (and you haven’t packed your own snacks), the gas station convenience store is your best food option. “Gas station food” tends to mean potato chips, candy or Little Debbie snack-cakes, washed down with a soda (I myself am partial to gummy sharks). But most gas station stores offer a relatively robust snack selection these days, and there are things—like the following seven items—that you can grab that won’t saddle you with empty calories, preservatives or sugar highs and lows.
How did I come to these selections? Well, not only have I been on the road about every other weekend for the past two months, thereby become something of a gas station food connoisseur, but I am writing this not from an office desk, not from my bedroom. I am writing this from a Super-8 Motel room in Lafayette, Indiana, where I went out and did *field research* at the Speedway, Shell and BP stations next door to me. “Gourmet” might be stretching it, but if you’re looking for something not terribly unhealthy when dining a la gas station, here’s what I suggest:
