We don’t want to be alarmist, but it’s true: You’re getting older by the minute. If you’re like the rest of us, we don’t mind the fact that age is making us smarter, wiser and a bit more confident in our sex appeal. But one thing we can all agree on is that while getting older can be a joyride, looking older just isn’t. Which is why we were stoked to read about new research that showed doing something as simple as drinking green tea can help us retain our youthful guise. (We knew there was a reason we’ve been opting for tea over coffee for the last year.)
According to a study from Emory University, green tea can help us retain the precious elasticity in our skin, and since elastic skin has fewer wrinkles than non-elastic skin, that’s something we can drink to.
In the study, 40 women with moderately-aged skin were given one of two treatments: green tea supplements and a cream of green tea extracts for their arms and face or placebos. In the end, the green tea group’s skin showed a significant improvement in the content of skin elastic tissue, while the control group’s did not. That was the good news. The not-so-good news is that there wasn’t enough change to make a noticeable difference in the appearance of the skin, leading researchers to believe that over time and possibly with an increase in the amount of it, improvements in elasticity will become more visible.
So for now, we continue to ditch old resentments, sip our green tea and wait. And if you just can’t get past the taste of green tea, you can always make your own green tea ice cream–for real. Check out this video, and if nothing else, you’ll be entertained by the commentator’s accent:
