Today’s Ultimate Yoga has us focusing on poses that can beat mild depression. Calming the nervous system down is an important part of dealing with mental stress and imbalances. Inversions like ‘Legs Up the Wall’ and ‘Shoulder Stand’ are particularly helpful for stress relief because they reverse the body’s blood flow, stimulate energy and help regulate chemical balances in the brain. They’re also believed to improve the functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic, nervous and endocrine systems by normalizing stress hormones throughout the body.
Watch this sequence of yoga poses and consider adding them to your normal stretching and workout routine. Headstand and Handstand are two other inversion poses that can help alleviate the symptoms of depression. And don’t worry if you can’t do a full inversion–modified ones where your toes remain on the ground or you use the wall for a prop are perfectly fine. Practicing these may not necessarily be the only natural medicine you need for depression, but they can definitely help.
