In today’s weird and disturbing news, the latest trend in cosmetic surgery is reshaping our genitals. Ouch. According to the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, female cosmetic genital surgery is becoming increasingly popular, specifically for the labia. In fact, the number of labial reduction procedures has increased 500% during the last 10 years.
The reason for so much attention to the way our lady parts look? To reduce the size of them, to make them more symmetrical, to improve their appearance (because, you know, everyone’s looking), reduce discomfort, improve confidence and wanting to improve sexual intercourse.
Researchers analyzed 33 women who were seeking the cosmetic surgery. Perhaps more disturbing than wanting to manipulate the size of their labia (which all women reportedly had a normal width and length to begin with according to a gynecologist who examined them) is the fact that the average age of these women was 23, with 45% of them being under the age of 15 when they first noticed their supposed outcast of a vagina.
What happened to the 33 women in this study? Three of them underwent the knife, everyone else was refused. Of those told no, 12 still remained focused on getting the surgery, 11 women accepted a referral for a psychologist and one participant was referred to mental health services.
Sometimes you just have to have a sense of curiosity and humor about such issues. So we leave you with this outtake from Date Night where Tina Fey talks about the importance of viewing her own lady parts:
