Continuing with our new column, “That Girl”, we are celebrating the accomplishments of real women who make health and fitness a priority because we know that true athletes come in all shapes, sizes, ages and athletic abilities from around the world. So this week we’re celebrating Leslie Tanner, an accomplished indoor cycling instructor and studio owner who says she gets inspired every day from fellow cyclers in her class.

Fitness/health accomplishment you are most proud of:
After eight years of instructing indoor cycling classes in various locations, I am so proud to have started and opened my own cycling studio. Having tried most fitness avenues, I find cycling to be challenging, yet fun, each and every time I get on the bike and it fits so many ages and athletic abilities. I am proud to offer this exercise opportunity to the people in my community.
What inspires you to get fit every day?
Being active and healthy is not only about an outward appearance. For me, it is part of my life and I feel that I have left something out of my day if I have not had a little sweat therapy. When exercise becomes a habit and part of your daily routine—you can expect to see results in your body and mind.
What do you do when you don’t feel like working out?
We all have those mornings when we would rather have another cup of coffee and stay put. I know from experience that I will feel a million times better if I get up and get going. Having this knowledge and knowing others are showing up for me, gets me excited to be on the bike each and every morning. An hour flies by and smiles spread around the room. Group exercise is so motivating–I love it.
Favorite energizing meal:
That’s a tough one. Right now, it is the Poke Bowl from Salt Life Restaurant in Jacksonville, FL. Rice, steamed spinach, avocado, ahi tuna with sesame seeds and something rich and chocolatey for dessert. YUM!!!!
What’s your favorite way to chill post-workout?
Nothing is better than a great shower and being surrounded by my family and dog Charlie with Pandora playing throughout the house.
What is your top kick-ass workout?
An hour-long indoor cycling class followed by a 90-minute heated Vinyasa Flow class. Afterwards, I am completely spent, but feel oh, so good!
Where is your favorite/most unique place you’ve ever exercised?
No matter where I travel, I usually seek out studios that offer interesting innovations in the fitness industry, like cycling, yoga, ballet, hula hooping, surfing mixed with yoga, chi running, etc. It is fun to see what others are doing, and I usually take something away that I can apply to my workouts and instruction.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through sports?
Sharing my passion and love for fitness, especially cycling, has been like a gift that keeps giving. Living on a small island, I have met some of the most remarkable people that I may not have met otherwise. I am honored and flattered every class that people come and give their all and put their trust in me. I put together a mix of music that is quite eclectic that seems to get a grin and sing along somewhere in the room each class. I know through our hour of exercise and good music, we are all connecting and making a difference in each other’s day!
