That tray of breakfast tricked you, didn’t it? What looks like eggs, bacon, toast, baked beans and blood sausage is, in fact, just dessert disguised as breakfast. Which, sadly, is a much more impressive disguise than food companies and restaurants have been giving their desserts-served-before-noon for the past few decades.
I’m not a historian, so don’t quote me on this, but ‘m pretty sure it’s the advent of breakfast cereal that sent us on a downward spiral towards sugar and fortified grains as our primary source of pre-lunch “nutrition.”
The above photo looks like a traditional British breakfast, but it’s really panna cotta and lemon curd (“eggs”), white chocolate biscuits covered in orange and strawberry coulis (“beans”), brioche (“toast”), chocolate biscuit cake (“sausage”), and candied brandy snaps (“bacon”).
