Wow, it seems like just yesterday that Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley announced the birth of their new baby girl, Alexa Ray Joel (who has since gone on to follow her father’s footsteps and become a singer and pianist herself), but now the 25-year-old has revealed that her ex-boyfriend gave her a sexually-transmitted infection (STI) — and according to a recent interview, the superstars’ daughter doesn’t seem to be that concerned about it.
When speaking to XO Jane this week, Alexa Ray candidly talked about her ex-boyfriend and the fact that she contracted human papilloma virus (HPV) from him.
I had it. But I mean, a lot of people get it from my ex.
She then went on to say:
I mean it was fine, you know. There are no side effects. You just go and get it taken care of.
But there were no side effects, there was nothing. But, like I said, something like 98% of people have it. I wasn’t angry with him, because it’s so common and he wasn’t cheating on me. I mean I was living with him; I saw him everyday.
Just to set the record straight: The virus, which there are over 100 strains of, can have side-effects including genital warts and cervical cancer in some cases, although in many instances, there are no symptoms. This is why so many women (and now men) are choosing to get vaccinated against the disease. Wearing condoms and getting an annual Pap is also important. There is no cure for HPV, but there is treatment for the symptoms, if any. In many cases, it will just go away on its own.
It’s definitely admirable that Alexa Ray is speaking out about the disease and helping to inform others about it, but there is no reason to take the infection lightly and just assume most of us will get it.
