The refrigerated section at your corner bodega or local grocery store is growing. Coconut water, kombucha, more kinds of canned tea than you can shake a stick at…and energy drinks, as far as the eye can see. But it’s not all Red Bull and Rockstar–there are some new, “environmentally-friendly”, “organic” offerings, now, too. But are they really any better than the aggressively-marketed conventional variety? Let’s compare.
To study these items, I purchased one of each kind: a can of something called “Viso”, which says it’s organic; and one Rockstar, which claims to contain “punch.” I bought these because they looked the most similar, made similar claims, and were similarly priced–essentially, the best control subjects I could find. Also, I bought the “punch” one because it seemed like it might contain juice. It does not. Apparently, the “juiced” one does.
I compared ingredients, flavor, and nutritional to see which, if either, was more nutritionally-sound. Here’s what I found:
