Lindsay Lohan‘s Playboy shoot just leaked, and it’s…creepily similar to the iconic shoots of Marilyn Monroe that ran in the magazine’s first issue. This isn’t the first time Lindsay’s posed like Marilyn (back in 2008, she imitated “The Last Sitting” photo shoot for New York Magazine, pouting in platinum locks and nothing but bedsheets). But this shoot is so literal, it’s hard not to see all the other parallels between Lohan and Marilyn. In the spread, she even bears an eerie resemblance to Anna Nicole Smith, who also suffered from mental and drug problems before her untimely death. Looking at the new images, it’s hard to ignore the eerie (and detrimental) drug connection between the three women.
The shoot, called “Lindsay Reborn” is either supposed to be her career comeback, or a quick way for her to earn a much-needed $1 million, depending on who you ask. But either way, her “rebirth” in Playboy washes over the elephant in the room: Lindsay is a severely troubled young woman whose life is a wreck. While Hugh Hefner—and many others—finds photos like hers and Marilyn’s “classy,” we can’t help but feel it’s tacky to idolize young women whose lives are such a mess, and who die tragically young deaths because of it.
The continual rehashing of Marilyn imagery to clean up the reputation of Hollywood’s enfant terribles is almost twisted at this point. A well-coifed blonde hairstyle and little else perpetuates a damaging myth that if you can strip down and look great as a blonde, your severe mental health and drug problems aren’t a bother; in fact, they might even make you more sexy.
While LiLo and Anna Nicole’s problems have been much more public than Marilyn’s were in her time, they’ve both been able to gloss over those issues by, essentially, acting like Marilyn, which just seems to perpetuate this myth that if you can look like a happy sexpot and display your large breasts, then by God, we don’t care about the fact that you’re a total trainwreck.
In this case, it’s hard to be unmoved by how quickly Lindsay has spiraled from a child star to taking off her clothes for a paycheck. She’s still only 25 years old. Her life has probably been as problematic as Marilyn’s by now. And it’s not really a stretch to envision her going down the same route as Anna Nicole Smith. With her legal troubles and drug problems, the connection to Marilyn and Anna Nicole is more disturbing than “classy” or “iconic.”
I wish I believed that Lindsay has been reborn, and is going to do better than Marilyn or Anna Nicole, but photos like these mostly just make me feel sad, as if we’ve already received an ETA for her untimely death.
