“You are what you eat” may be a line as tired as grey weather has you feeling, but during the deepest, darkest days as we approach true winter (it’s still technically autumn until next week), eating foods rich in specific minerals, vitamins, and nutrients can actually boost your mood, and help you feel more alert and awake.
Often, people feel lower in the winter not only because of a lack of sunshine–but because they’re moving around less, and eating fewer healthy foods. In fact, according to a Gallup poll released last week, November and December show record lows in exercise and the consumption of fruits an vegetables, which can definitely account for feelings of sluggishness and depression. Foods rich in nutrients like folate, iron and omega-3 fatty acids can help chase away the winter blues in a variety of ways–but you don’t need a multi-vitamin or supplement to get them. Get back into the holiday spirit by picking some of these foods, which contain some of these mood-boosting powerhouses to chase away the heaviness.
