Yesterday, Miss Fit caused a bit of a stir about nudity in the locker room. A reader wrote in asking:
Dear Miss Fit,
I don’t consider myself a prude, but why do so many women have to walk around naked in the locker room at the gym? I just find it really uncomfortable and wish they would cover up.
To which Miss Fit responded:
Miss Fit agrees! Dropping a towel quickly to pull on your clothes is one thing, but standing at the mirror drying your hair while completely naked is another. This is where a talk with management comes in. Ask them to post some polite signs in the locker room reminding gym patrons to practice modesty.
But not everyone agreed with this advice or the right that someone has to be bothered by such nudity.
Asking people not to be naked in a locker room is absurd. Unless they’re crossing into your personal space, I don’t see why it should be an issue. It’s a locker room…
I frankly find it strange that some people would be SO bothered by a naked body that they would call the management. Better avoid art museums too…
i agree as well. i think asking managment is leaning toward the absurd – if someone is comfortable walking around naked in semi-public, more power to them. its a human body, we’ve all got one, so why is seeing someone else’s so bad?
funny story, tho: my old gym was by my office and i resolved to go in the mornings. turns out, one of the managers in my office went at that time as well – and she was a naked hairstyler/toothbrusher, etc….and a naked chatter, as in she’d talk to me about work when she was fully nude. i do have to admit, that made me a little uncomfortable but i did get to work on maintaining steady eye contact with one of my superiors. i also switched back to evening workouts.
And kj wrote:
Sorry, I gotta disagree on the naked thing. I’m not a huge fan of seeing the naked hairstyler/toothbrusher/etc. but that’s their perogative.
This seems to be an age-old dilemma at the gym. On the one hand, locker rooms are for changing and showering, so some degree of nudity is expected. How else are people supposed to change out of their sweaty workout clothes and get ready to go home or back to work?
On the other hand, some people take the right to be naked a bit far, according to some gym-goers. Changing and showering is one thing, but do people really have to stand around au buff and brush their teeth–or carry on a conversation with us?
