I agree with GOOD editor Nona Willis Aronowitz about this whole Newt Gingrich/open marriage kerfluffle: It’s casting open marriage a terrible light. Gingrich wasn’t looking for a progressive solution to the confining strictures of monogamy! or anything like that, according to his ex-wife’s story. He was seeking permission to continue an affair that he’d already been carrying on for six years (as Dan Savage wrote: That’s not an open marriage, that’s an ultimatum). Ask any open marriage advocate, however, and they’ll tell you that the healthy open marriages are based on honesty, respect, and setting the boundaries in advance.
But plenty of notable people have navigated much more successful open marriages than Gingrich. And, no, I’m not talking Brad and Angelina, Will and Jada Pinket Smith or Tilda Swinton and some French painter—celebrities who are in every gosh darn list of famous people in open marriages based on vague quotes expressing hypothetical support for non-monogamy. The following famous couples (with the exception of one) are or were in confirmed open relationships—often quite happily, and for many years.
