Zooey Deschanel Says Her Healthy Weight Is ‘Weird’ For Hollywood

Zooey Deschanel is featured on the latest Allure, so I clicked through her cover shoot gallery online. Between quotes about her bangs and makeup, inevitably, I found the obligatory quote about her diet and weight. And it was surprisingly refreshing. Which, as she points out, is sadly “weird” for Hollywood.

The slideshow talked about her looks mostly in terms of her signature style, haircut, and makeup. But she did offer a quick comment on her body:

While Deschanel watches her weight by sticking to a diet of vegetables, grains, and proteins, she isn’t obsessed. “Some people around me, they’re like 89 pounds,” she says. “I’m not going to say I’m a big girl. I’m a very small person, but I’m a healthy weight. That might be a little weird for Hollywood.”

I can’t really say this without admitting that I watch her show (but it’s just on in the background while I’m doing other stuff, I swear!), but she’s right: Her body does stand out from many other women’s in Hollywood.

More than once, I’ve seen her on the show and thought: ‘gee, that’s nice, she looks so… normal.’ But, as Hanna pointed out when I brought up the subject, she’s still slim. She’s just not scary-looking, which is a pretty warped yardstick.

The fact that she seems to think she’s one step away from being “big” just because she doesn’t look emaciated (or muscular to the point of seeming like she spends all off-screen hours in a gym) is kind of sad. Thankfully, it sounds like Zooey has a fairly healthy perspective on her weight, and a good handle on how to stick to a healthy diet.

I never thought I’d say this, but…Why can’t more actresses be like Zooey Deschanel?

Love Zooey! Thanks for pointing this out! I don’t think she thinks she’s “one step away from being big” though; she did say “I’m a very small person”.

Oh no, I’m not saying that she is… I just think her quote is pretty ambiguous; she sort of sounds like she thinks she’s big, or that she’s at least not “skinny.” Anyway, the point really isn’t a critique of her at all — like I said in the post, I wish more actresses would adopt a similar attitude!

She doesn’t say anything about being one step away from being “big”, she says she’s small and that being healthy might be looked at as weird or perhaps big in Hollywood. You guys are constantly taking quotes out of context.

      Hey Jill,

Her full quote is in the post, so I don’t see how I’m taking it out of context. She says: “I’m not going to say I’m a big girl. I’m a very small person, but I’m a healthy weight. That might be a little weird for Hollywood.” …To me, this reads like “I’m not big, BUT…” Zooey seems smart enough to realize that she’s not big; my point is that I think she’s saying by Hollywood standards, she isn’t thin. Which is ridiculous.

      Hope that clarifies,
      Briana

RE: To me, this reads like “I’m not big, BUT…”

I think the others are right here. I think her “I’m not going to say I’m a big girl” is her way of saying she’s not that skinny girl who refuses to admit she’s skinny. We all know that girl, the Regina George, who is already a size two and refuses to accept that she’s thin.

And I have to agree completely that she does look so… normal, and of course, beautiful. It’s one of the reasons I am such a fan.

Man, I can not stand her. Sorry. I feel like she’s got such an annoying way about her . . . although to be fair, I think I just really hated Summer in 500 Days of Summer, and my hatred stuck.

I mean, she might not be emaciated but she is still a super skinny girl! Skinnier than most of my friends for sure. And most of my friends are thin-average, go the gym, eat mostly salads, live in CA, etc.

Hollywood just has set such an unrealistic crazy standard that we have to get excited when a girl is just “naturally pretty damn thin” rather than “crazy diet thin.” What a weird time to try and be an attractive woman.

I think your interpretation of her words is a little skewed — and you make it sound way more confusing than it actually is.

    • Briana Rognlin

Hey Jenna, I totally respect that. But I do think the main point is still clear: That a healthy weight is considered “weird” in Hollwood, where stick-thin is considered “normal.” Which is pretty messed up (and good on Zooey for pointing it out).

Not sure that photo is a good representation of her point…She looks very slender to me in that photo. Sure she isnt Jolie, Ritchie, Bosworth skinny, but she is still thinner than most girls I know.

    You guys are all idiots

In the photo, she looks pretty slim and glammy, but I have spotted times in her show when she looks semi-normal – in a mini-skirt, for example. She doesn’t have the mile-long and pin-thin legs of a model, which is a bit unusual, for Hollywood standards. Her head also doesn’t look too big for her body, like those so many starlets who resemble lollipop-heads. In short, I don’t feel compelled to tell her to eat a sandwich when I watch her show. I find her look refreshing, even if “normal” is still on the slender side compared with the general population.
