You gotta love Tim Gunn. When he’s not lecturing us to quit showing so much skin and stop wearing yoga pants in public, the funny style guru is telling us that he hasn’t had sex in 29 years. Wait, what? That’s right, on his new show yesterday, The Revolution, Gunn stunned the audience with his confession of celibacy. But is 29 years of no sex really that big of a deal? It’s not to him. And he’s not afraid to explain why.
The show’s topic was about couples with low-sex or no-sex relationships–something that 15-20% of the population reportedly experiences.
That’s when Gunn said:
I will share with all of you … I haven’t had sex in 29 years. Do I feel like less of a person for it? No!
Gunn, who is openly gay and typically private about his personal life, went on to explain why he’s abstained for so long, blaming it on a bad breakup:
I was in a very intense relationship for a long time and my partner ended it, saying quite frankly that he was impatient with my sexual performance. It was at the cusp of AIDS, and I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I certainly was. I’m happy to be healthy and alive, quite frankly.
And despite the dry spell, Gunn says he’s not opposed to another sexual relationship some day.
I have feelings. It’s not as though I’m some barren forest. I don’t want to imply to anyone that I have a mandate that says no sex. I don’t. I don’t know what’s around the corner.
Good for you, Tim. We applaud your honesty and doing what feels right to you.
