Yesterday, we shared our concerns about Ioana Spangenberg, of 20-inch waist fame, and the media’s fascination with her ultra-thin body. I expressed disappointment in our desperate attempt to “figure out” her body. But in the comments and on our Facebook page, that’s all that happened. And even there, no consensus could be reached. Is why she looks the way she does really the most important part of this story?
Commenters were so divided on whether or not Spangenberg’s body was “naturally thin,” whether it was the result of extreme corset training, or whether she truly is suffering from an eating disorder or disease which causes her to be so gaunt-looking. There was quite a bit of speculation as to how a human body could look so extreme–as well as some discussion about what might lead someone who was already has a negative body image to seek the spotlight.
But really…does it matter? Does it matter how she looks, or the reasons behind why she looks that way? As long as we’re still standing around, staring, trying to “figure her out,” are we still doing a giant disservice by focusing on her appearance, rather than her health? Part of what troubles me with Spangenberg is her assertion that she eats nothing but junk food in an attempt to put on weight, which isn’t good for her heart or her organs (which are already potentially in peril)–but that fact seems unimportant to just about everyone else.
The main focus, instead, seems to be the debate between whether or not she is “naturally” thin–and thus, a spectacle that we can gaze upon without concern–or if she is, in fact, suffering from some inner pain for which we need to lend our sympathy.
So, let’s settle it in a very-official Blisstree poll. Why does Ioana Spangenberg look the way she does? Or, does it matter at all?
Sorry! This poll is now closed.
