Rihanna‘s low-cut, high-slit dress at the Grammy’s last weekend left many of us gawking at her body. And rightfully so. The 23-year-old pop star looked terrific. She looks lean and healthy, her arms are toned and she surely has some strong abs and legs too. All of which is great, and we are happy for her. But what we’re not happy about is the way that her trainer makes her enviable body seem too easy to get.
In a recent interview with People, celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak revealed what Rihanna is up to these days in order to have such a fit, toned body.
First he said:
She’s got such a beautiful body naturally. With someone like her, it’s about the fine tuning.
He went on to say that when Rihanna is on the road, her fitness routine involves merely three workouts a week for 25 minutes backstage or in her hotel room. But when she’s settled at one location, she increases her workouts, which include biking, jumping rope, jumping jacks and stationary jogging:
She’s been really focused and stepped it up, increasing her sessions to five days a week and bumping her cardio to a total of 30 minutes a day from 10.
All of which is great, but 25 to 30 minutes three to five times a week is not a realistic amount of exercise if someone wants a body like hers. First of all, she is not sitting at a desk all day like many of us are, so she is likely getting a good amount of exercise on stage and in rehearsals in addition to these numbers. Plus, with those toned arms, she must surely have to do some kind of strength or resistance training, but that is not mentioned.
Secondly, her workouts barely meet the exercise guidelines that are set by the American College of Sports Medicine, which recommend at least 150 minutes a week. In a country where two-thirds of our population is overweight or obese, telling people that Rihanna only works out 25 to 30 minutes a few days a week is sending a very dangerous message. Most people need much more than that, and 50% of us don’t even meet the 150-minute minimum.
Oh, and let’s not forget that she is only 23 years old. Her body is probably more a result of her age than her short fitness routines.
Nevertheless, Pasternak says Rihanna “looks amazing” and she “keeps getting better and better.” True. But let’s just keep things in perspective. Not all of us can look like that with a minimal fitness routine. It’s just too good to be true.
