Jon Stewart invited Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, to speak on The Daily Show last night, explaining that in light of how many “penised human beings” are leading our current political debate over birth control, he thought he’d invite a “non-penised” human to come weigh in on the topic. After quipping that it was “big of him” to bring her on the show, Richards gave some more serious—and some of the most sane—comments on where this debate really figures into women’s lives.
She first explained that she—like most of us here at Blisstree—is still surprised that this is a topic of conversation to begin with:
It’s incredible to see first that birth control itself is a topic of political debate in this election.
Stewart jokingly corrected her, saying it was “religious liberties,” not birth control, and she delivered a line we think says it all:
For women, birth control isn’t a religious topic. It’s a health topic.
She added that 99% of women use birth control and that Planned Parenthood provides birth control to millions of women per year:
…So yeah, I think they’re kind of mystified by what the controversy’s all about.
