Snooki has confirmed that she’ll be filming the next season of Jersey Shore while pregnant; a lot of people are, understandably, perplexed as to how this is possible, given that the show is primarily driven by most of the cast being really drunk, most of the time. Critics say it could change the dynamics of the show, at best, or completely ruin it at worst. But while it remains unclear how a 100% sober Snooki is going to fit in on Season 6, I think this could actually make for some really great reality TV; while it might not be what all fans were looking for, the reality is that not all moms or moms-to-be are healthy, or surrounded by healthy people. And Snooki, of all people, should make that pretty interesting.
I’m not a Mom, nor will I pretend to know what it’s like to be one. But I do know that plenty of women get pregnant before they’ve checked off every box on an ideal health list, including tough changes like quitting smoking and giving up drinking. Finding out that you’re pregnant can make those things very real and urgent priorities, but it doesn’t necessarily make them easy.
Luckily, Snooki seemed to be getting her health on track before she ever decided (or…not) to have a baby. Last year, she lost weight (although we’ve questioned her methods), and reportedly cut way back on drinking. So for her, the most difficult change will likely be figuring out how to be sober around a bunch of drunk people—not actually getting sober.
And this is what a lot of pregnant women have to deal with (even if their crew isn’t quite as inclined to binge drink as the circle Snooki runs in), so why shouldn’t this make for awesome reality TV?
So far, everyone seems to be getting plenty of entertainment out of the revelation that Snooki’s with child, but once the jokes about how scary it is that she’s having a baby wear off, I still think she’ll prove to be pretty interesting. She’ll still continue to make audiences cringe as she approaches motherhood (with or without booze, I think Snooki’s smart enough to know that acting stupid is what makes her so entertaining), but I think she’ll also make Jersey Shore the most unexpected show to relate to moms and moms-to-be: Because at the end of the day, a lot of women feel estranged, bewildered, and frustrated when they suddenly have to lose their inner Snooki for the sake of a new inner baby.
