In The Age Of CGI, Why Should Anne Hathaway Starve Herself For Les Miserables?

Anne Hathaway is apparently eating 500 calories per day in an effort to shed 16 pounds for her role in Les Miserables—or at least, a few scenes of the film. Unlike other roles that have required Hathaway to lose weight (like Catwoman, for example), her role as Fantine—a prostitute who dies and later returns as a ghost—only calls for her to look emaciated for some of the time she spends on screen. Which, for an already-thin actress, wouldn’t be too hard to accomplish with CGI. So why should Anne Hathaway starve herself, or even lose any weight at all?

With only three weeks to lose a significant amount of weight, Hathaway is said to be eating nothing but apples and protein shakes in order to quickly transform herself for scenes in which she’s either dying or a ghost, according to an unnamed source:

Unfortunately, she only has 15 to 20 days to lose as much weight as possible – up to a stone-and-a-half – because she’s been filming the scenes showing her fit and healthy, almost slightly chubby.

It’s not ideal but, as with any high-budget movie, there are strict time constraints.

Producers have assigned her a personal trainer and she is literally eating nothing more than a couple of apples a day, and some protein – mainly in the form of a shake.

She isn’t the first actress or actor to lose an extraordinary amount of weight for a role, but this is so blatantly unhealthy that it’s hard not to cringe (despite the fact that it was Hathaway’s choice to take the role…and she’s getting well-compensated for her work).

Anne claims a kale and DUST diet worked for her herone chic figure. Perhaps Adam is not in London so where will she get the dust.
