Blisstree has been skeptical about Burger King‘s efforts to revamp their image and push new “healthy” menu additions, but nothing has made my jaw drop quite like the news that David Beckham is shilling for the fast food chain now. Yes, the professional athlete is now featured in commercials, presumably as part of their bid to get health-conscious customers on board. It’s just a shame they didn’t actually add healthy items to the menu.
In the 30-second ad features Beckham asking for a strawberry-banana smoothies—and mesmerizing the staff, of course—which apparently is one of the new “real fruit” smoothies and frappes. According to Daily Mail, adding smoothies was a big to-do for Burger King, which is also adding wraps and salads to the menu to lure in health-conscious customers. In fact, it took them months to figure out a way to make “health” food taste like non-health food:
…it took about seven months and six tries before the company found the right mix of creaminess, iciness and tanginess for its new strawberry banana and tropical mango smoothies.
Which means…they likely made their “healthy” options a lot less healthy. (It may be lower in calories than a milkshake, but if it’s that processed, there’s no way it’s full of fresh, whole ingredients without added sugars and preservatives.)
Beckham isn’t the only celeb who’ll be shilling for Burger King: According to TIME, they’ve also enlisted Mary J. Blige and Jay Leno to promote their big menu change. But he is the most outrageous. Beckham, of all celebrity spokespeople, should know that the highly processed food he’s promoting isn’t good for anyone, regardless of how many calories it does (or doesn’t) have. We’d rather he stick to selling Adidas.
