Some Republicans have certainly done their share to alienate women over the past few months with their ridiculous stances on women’s health, birth control and abortion. But alas, President Obama shows us that not all politicians are created equal. In his new video entitled A Message to Planned Parenthood Supporters, Obama just scored some major points with us.
He starts out by saying that the policies and politics of women’s reproductive health should be separated:
For you, and for most Americans, protecting women’s health is a mission that stands above politics. And yet, over the past year, you’ve had to stand up to politicians who want to deny millions of women the care they rely on and inject themselves into decisions that are best made between a woman and her doctor.
Then he makes one of the smartest statements we’ve heard all year:
Let’s be clear here. Women are not an interest group. They’re mothers and daughters and sisters and wives–they’re half of this country. They’re perfectly capable of making their own choices about their health.
Did you hear that all you Republican dictators who want to control our bodies? We are perfectly capable of making our own choices. Score some major points for Obama!
Now, we’re not totally naive to believe that this statement was not a political move–at least in part. Its timing and its message is just too perfect. But, nevertheless, we’ll take it. And so will other women. A recent USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows that support of women voters has shifted to Obama after the infamous debates over health care and contraception, giving him the lead in battleground states this November.
Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans continue to say they want to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood because of its support for its abortion rights–and for Democratic political candidates.
Of course, not everyone is happy about Obama’s stance–including this Christian group who wrote, “President Barack Hussein Obama loves – really loves – Planned Parenthood and its multi-million dollar business of killing unborn children.”
But Obama is not backing down. And he’s sending a pretty strong message that everyone–Democrats and Republicans, male and female–should know:
So when some professional politicians casually say they’ll get rid of Planned Parenthood, don’t forget what they’re really talking about: eliminating the funding for preventive care that millions of women rely on and leaving them to fend for themselves.
Nice work, Mr. President.
