Actress, comedian, singer, and media critic Sandra Bernhard is officially my hero of the day. In a recent Interview magazine piece, in which she was questioned by long-time friend and colleague Roseanne Barr, Bernhard, who has always been an outspoken advocate for body-positivity and being exactly who you are, dropped some seriously amazing truthbombs about beauty, self-deprecation, and why she never bothered to try to be the “girl next door.”
During the interview, Bernhard talks about everything: getting started in comedy, her sexuality (not only is she openly gay, she also played one of the first major lesbian roles on television when she was on Roseanne), her comfort with nudity (she has posed for Playboy, and removed her clothes during her one-woman show, I’m Still Here…Damn It!, revealing her cesarean scars from the birth of her daughter), and what makes her laugh (which is, by the way, not fat people falling down in the streets, as Roseanne, who is admittedly less body-positive, suggests). But the most incredible, share-worthy, inspirational quotes are the ones about how she refused to change her appearance or deprecate it to become successful.
I want to write everyone one of these lines onto postcards and mail them to insecure teen girls and Hollywood starlets who feel the need to tear themselves down. But I am too lazy for that, so instead, I rounded them up with awesome pictures of Sandra Bernhard being awesome so that you all could revel in them.
