Non-Toxic Nails: Affordable, Eco-Friendly Polish For Spring

Love manicures and pedicures? You could be treating yourself to more than a little pampering—the nail polish used at salons can be full of nasty ingredients and carcinogens. A recent California study found even nail polishes advertised as free of ‘the toxic trio‘—toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde—often contained one or more of these chemicals. And significant exposure to these toxic nail polish ingredients can cause birth defects and chronic health conditions.

Among the products tested that the state says were mislabeled: Sation 99 basecoat, Sation 53 red-pink nail color, Dare to Wear nail lacquer, Chelsea 650 Baby’s Breath Nail Lacquer, New York Summer Nail Color, Paris Spicy 298 nail lacquer, Sunshine nail lacquer, Cacie Light Free Gel Basecoat, Cacie Sun Protection Topcoat, Golden Girl Topcoat, Nail Art Top-N-Seal and High Gloss Topcoat.

There is no chemical-free nail polish on the market (at least not that I could find), but you can find brands free of the toxic-trio and other potentially dangerous ingredients (including some that are 100% vegan). Here are nine reasonably-priced ($8-$16), relatively non-toxic brands to try.

You forgot OPI and Essie! (two of my favorites)

I really like Suncoat’s peel-off nail polishes. There are also other brands of water-based nail polish that are not mentioned in this article.
