New photos are out of Anne Hathaway (aka “Anne Waste-away” if you’re the Daily Mail) looking thin on the set of ‘Les Miserables.’ And they pretty much prove that it was totally unnecessary for her to crash diet and lose 16 pounds for the part.
In the photos, she’s wearing what looks like a thick woolen dress that covers almost all of her body—if she weren’t shorn of her long brown hair and wearing makeup that emphasizes her pale skin and gaunt face, she’d basically look like she does any other time: still thin.
I’ve said before that, in the age of CGI, it seems ludicrous that Hathaway should starve herself for ‘Les Miserables’ (or any other role). But these photos make me even more skeptical that her reported 500-calorie-per-day diet was crucial for the role. I’ll let others pretend to worry about Hathaway’s health, but for my part, I’m mostly annoyed that Hollywood continues to glorify extreme weight loss for actresses as some kind of creative pursuit—when it mostly just seems like a way to get PR.
