Dick Clark Died Of A Heart Attack; Do You Know The 9 Warning Signs?

Today, with great sadness, the world bids farewell to the American Bandstand icon, Dick Clark, who died yesterday from a heart attack at the age of 82. According to the CDC, heart attacks are the leading cause of death for both men and women and over 600,000 die from them every year. That’s why it’s important to know the warning signs and symptoms.

According to his publicist, Clark suffered a heart attack while at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica for an outpatient procedure, and “attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful.” No one can say for sure whether there were symptoms leading up to his death or whether catching them earlier could have saved his life. But it’s still important to be aware of your body and report any of these signs immediately:

–Pressure, a feeling of fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes
–Pain extending beyond your chest to your shoulder, arm, back, or even to your teeth and jaw
–Increasing episodes of chest pain
–Prolonged pain in the upper abdomen
–Shortness of breath
–Sweating
–Impending sense of doom
–Fainting
–Nausea and vomiting

In addition, heart attack signs and symptoms in women could also include:

–Heartburn or abdominal pain
–Clammy skin
–Lightheadedness or dizziness
–Unusual or unexplained fatigue

According to the Mayo Clinic, not all heart attacks strike suddenly like we tend to see on TV. Many people who experience one have these warning signs hours, days or even weeks in advance. That’s why it’s important to recognize these symptoms and not ignore them.

As always, when anything seems different with your body, contact your doctor immediately.

Rest in peace Dick Clark. You will be missed.
