Today, it is May. Which, aside from bringing some relief to allergy sufferers (hopefully) also mean’s it’s Employee Health and Fitness Month. But some companies take the health and fitness of their employees seriously all year round–and we think that deserves some praise.
Granted, this may seem like kind of a frivolous awareness month, but consider this: according to the National Business Group on Health, for ever $1 that employers spend on employee wellness programs (which include gym memberships incentives and discounts, onsite gyms, nutritional counseling, and other health-based education and outreach), it’s estimated that about $3 are saved in decreased health care cost and fewer sick days. Additionally, employees who feel physically fit are more satisfied, more productive, and overall, more likely to stick around and work hard. In a country where health care costs are astronomical (and costs related to obesity are in the billions), investing in the wellness of the workforce starts to look a lot more like a smart money-saving venture than some touchy-feely thing for startups created by 20-somethings.
Using FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies To Work For list, we found seven that have realized the amazing benefits of employee wellness perks and programs, and are investing in the health of their people, whether it be with workout facilities, incentives for health, or other wellness measures. And for that, we salute them.
Of course, there are plenty more where this came from. Does your company offer a gym membership or other health-based incentive? Feel free to gloat in the comments!
