The top post on Drudge yesterday was “Hillary Au Naturale,” a snarky critique of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s appearance in Bangladesh, supposedly wearing no makeup. The Daily Mail and Fox News followed suit, critiquing her looks, instead of reporting on her talks about Iranian nukes. And in an interview with CNN, the Secretary of State politely brushed off everyone’s concerns over her beauty routine.
CNN Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jill Dougherty asked Hillary what she thought of the blogosphere’s fascination with her without makeup, wearing glasses, to which she responded:
I feel so relieved to be at the stage I’m at in my life right now. Because you know if I want to wear my glasses I’m wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I’m pulling my hair back. You know at some point it’s just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention. If others want to worry about it, I’ll let them do the worrying for a change.
When Dougherty pushed on and asked if it drives her crazy, she insisted it’s just not a concern:
It doesn’t drive me crazy at all. It’s just not something that I think is that important anymore.
She was nicer than we’d be—we kind of wish she’d told Doughterty to come up with a question that’s more worth of her time—but then we suppose her diplomacy and maturity is probably what makes her the Secretary of State.
Comments poured in on Blisstree’s Facebook page yesterday remarking on Hillary’s look, noting that a) she did in fact seem to be wearing lipstick, making the headlines as inaccurate as they are petty, and b) that she looks great. We couldn’t agree more. Regardless, it’s kind of beside the point: Hillary isn’t a celebrity paid to primp and preen for cameras; she’s the Secretary of State.
