Hold off on those brunch plans and the visions of spending a day chore-free and at the spa. Supermodel Christy Turlington Burns wants all of us moms to boycott Mother’s Day this year. No gifts, no phone calls, no Facebook posts. Disappear, spend the day in silence, she says. Why? It’s her way of bringing attention to the thousands of women who die from childbirth every year. But not even a homemade card from your kids? Bring on the controversy.
In her new video, “No Mother’s Day”, Turlington Burns announced that she would not be celebrating Mother’s Day this year–and she wants all of us to join her. It’s her way of raising awareness for her nonprofit organization, Every Mother Counts, which brings light to the fact that 360,000 women die each year from pregnancy or childbirth-related problems.
That means, on Mother’s Day this year, approximately 1,000 women will die from attempting to become a mom. It’s a heart-breaking statistic for sure. Especially given the fact that these deaths are largely preventable. In poorer, developing countries where most of them occur, there are simply not enough resources to help these women.
So, raise your voice through an act of silence and disappear on Mother’s Day, they say in the campaign. This will show “just how much a mother is missed when she is gone.”
Not surprising though, not everyone agrees with this tactic.
Crella commented on their YouTube video:
Awareness’ is air…….it’s warm fuzzies that get nothing done. Send medical equipment to India, the country with the highest rate of maternal death. THAT’S doing something. This is no different than posting your bra color on Facebook to “raise awareness” of breast cancer…
How about giving this its own day instead of trampling all over Mother’s day?
This is ridiculous. We are supposed to be miserable because not everyone is happy. I get what they are trying to do, but this is the wrong way to go about it. It’s the one day a year that is for mothers and they think it should not be because not everyone is as fortunate. They are only increasing the overall amount of misery in the world by doing this, not helping to eliminate it. I don’t need to be made aware of this because we all know there are unhappy people in the world.

Pretty terrible idea…why not refuse gifts and ask that the money be donated if its this important instead of ignoring your family. Lol
Take a look at Turlington’s video and tell us, would you boycott Mother’s Day in support of maternal health?
