You would think that natural models are more comfortable with their bodies and their size, but it seems that that’s not always the case?
You have to remember that we are in an industry that loves extremes, so even if you are comfortable at a healthy weight, you are still not valued in this industry. It is tough when you know the amount of money you could be making if you gain 40lbs or lose 40+ lbs. To see the jobs other girls get because their hips are smaller, and the opportunities you don’t get because you are “bigger.” That is what this industry tells girls, and you have to remember most models are young and they just want to be successful and work, so if that means being unhealthy it can be a really hard choice to make. I don’t think you can assume someone is comfortable about their body based on size.
There are too many variables that come into play like I talked about before with a models past. If we get a girl after she has reached the end of her rope trying to keep her measurements down and literally has made herself sick in her attempts to meet agency size requirements, becoming comfortable with her body is going to be a longer process. I also have had talks with a top plus model who is a size 16 and she said to me that she hates being “fat” but yet you will see her talk about how she loves her body and curves etc… I just think it is a struggle that all women have and if we can stop bullshitting about always loving our bodies and making it seem like it is a simple thing to do, and instead talk honestly about what helps us feel better, we will cover more ground.
Do some of them still bullshit about their size and weight?
Oh my God, yes! It gets to the point we just laugh sometimes. We had a model come in for a open call and she was 6’0″ tall and a size 12. When we asked her what size she was, she said a 4. I don’t know if they just say what they think you want to hear or if that is what she really thinks. I would say 90% of our models think they are a size smaller then they really are.
Are some natural models not walking the walk then?
I think all of our models walk the walk, not without tripping up now and then but we can’t continue to grow and evolve if we lie to ourselves and think we are perfect.
Why do we all feel like we need to present ourselves at a certain size or weight that we’re not?
We are told that is what is valued. Every person wants to be valued and wanted and everyone wants to fit in. I am not even sure it is on purpose I just think it comes from that pressure to be this perfect image that girls can’t attain so it is easier to cheat closer to it in your head. Plus you have nonstop advertising playing on your insecurities mixed with vanity sizing. No wonder we are all screwed up!
Anything else you want to add about body acceptance with natural models?
I just want girls to know that models have the same, if not more, issues then they do. The pictures that you look at and think ” I want to look like her” that model looked at the same picture and most likely hated it because she has been criticized about her body. We always want to look like someone else, but we forget that there is someone that wishes they looked like us–and we aren’t even thankful for our own beauty. We struggle and we fall, but we get back up and we try harder next time. There is always room for growth in our lives and with support and help from each other we can break this cycle and start to have fewer “fat days” and more “Happy days.” As Bo Stanley learned last week, a photo does not define you as good or bad–it is just a photo and is not worthy of making you feel bad!
