The lovely and talented and generally amazing Isabella Rossellini gained a lot of acclaim for her “Green Porno” video series on the Sundance Channel, which illustrated the mating habits of various animals. Now, she’s back at it in a partnership with Burt’s Bees, to help educate the masses and end the colony collapse that is threatening honeybees. It’s both entertaining and educational. It’s edutainment!
Released just in time for Pollinator Week, the series, called “Burt Talks To Bees,” features the actual Burt (of Burt’s Bees), and then Rossellini playing Burt in a pretty sweet paper beard and plaid shirt. And, much like “Green Porno,” it gives detailed information about the lives and mating habits of various members of a honeybee colony, from the drone to the queen.
I’ll admit to knowing very little about colony collapse disorder, despite hearing a lot about the future of bees and how it’s in peril. But, as I learned from these videos, a lot of human gardening and yard maintenance behaviors are contributing factors. Green lawns, non-pollenating flowers, and other landscaping choices can hurt bees ability to do their job–not to mention survive. We could collectively be doing a lot more for the bees.
Take some time out during your lunch break today and learn about what you can do to make your yard more bee-friendly….though it’s worth it just to hear Isabella Rossellini say “regular bee sex?”
