Famed beauty blogger Lauren Luke posted a makeup tutorial on how to cover up bruises caused by domestic violence on YouTube. It’s disturbing, but is actually a subversive (and genius) PSA calling for abused women to stand up against their partners. This is one of the best PSA’s we’ve seen all year, but not just because it’s attention-grabbing—it forces viewers to consider the day-to-day realities of living with the after-effects of domestic violence.
Headlines about Rihanna and Chris Brown have also put the spotlight on issues of domestic violence and abusive relationships, but while those battles were tinged with debates about celebrities, privacy, and gossip, Luke’s video—made in conjunction with UK-based domestic violence awareness org Refuge—speaks directly to the reality of every day women who experience abuse, making it even more shocking, in some ways, than the awful mugshots of Rihanna’s bruised and swollen face that have circulated around in tabloids.
