Good for Kate Upton. No, freakin awesome for her. The 20-year-old model who was recently called a “fat cow” among other nasty things by the hateful SkinnyGossip blogger is retaliating and standing up for her body–but not in a defensive, all-out war kind of way, just in a really awesome way that now makes her the ultimate role model for girls and women when it comes to body image.
The former Sports Illustrated swimsuit supermodel is standing up for her curves and not allowing SkinnyGossip or anyone else to define what her body should look like–something that is not easy to do when your body is your business:
It was hard when I was first in the industry and people were like: ‘No, you are fat.’ But my body is something that you have to work out and eat healthily for.
She went on to explain that she is more focused on living her life rather than starving herself (like some models have been accused of):
I’m not doing drugs or not eating. I want to enjoy life and I can’t be enjoying life if I’m not eating and miserable.
How refreshing is that? It’s great to know that Upton has a healthy body image and isn’t about to be pressured into becoming too thin or not eating enough just to fit into someone else’s ideals.
Upton also explained that young models today are often treated horribly and endure all sorts of negativity about themselves:
Young models – these agents are horrible to them they treat them so badly. I went to Australia and my agent there said don’t call me if you need anything, just show up on these castings. Some models don’t say anything [about being sleazed] on but I’m very verbal I always said something.
I think it’s awesome that she stands up for herself, sets healthy and realistic expectations for her body and doesn’t succumb to anyone else’s ideals, except her own. She is obviously full of confidence about herself and her body–something that makes her an awesome role model. Imagine the impact that this could have on young girls and women who, instead of being told you’re too fat, they are told take care of your body, eat right and be happy about who you are.
Now if only more celebs and models shared her same thinking.
