I love to camp. I love, love, love to camp. But because I’m a vegetarian, most of the camping foods I grew up with are kind of out of the question. Hot dogs? Pass. Pork and beans? No, thanks. So what do you put in the cooler? What do you snack on? And so, I’ve put together a list of must-have vegan and vegetarian camping foods.
The key is separating out what food groups you want to hit, how many square meals you’ll need (how long are you going? Assume three meals a day and pack accordingly), and how best to combine just a few ingredients to make several diverse spreads. It’s also good to consider how many people you’re going with. Of course, if it’s you and a bunch of friends who all eat meat. you may end up packing your own personal food stash–but it’s kind of nice to bring enough to share, in case your site mates are curious about what exactly our lot eats.
So here are some basics that are easy to make, easy to pack, and easy to store. They’re not backpacking friendly–some of these need to be kept on ice–but if you’re pitching a tent and hanging out by a fire, they’re right up your alley.
