We’ve loved Elizabeth Banks and her super-open approach to women’s health care for a while now. But in a new video, she goes to bat for Planned Parenthood because, as she puts it, they were her health care provider when she didn’t have insurance. Also, she discusses her “heavy flow,” which delights me. Hooray for more period talk!
The video is a campaign ad for Barak Obama–but even if you’re not voting for him (or you’re not sure who you’re voting for), the message is still pretty clear: Women need health care options. And in many areas, Banks explains, Planned Parenthood is the best, most affordable option. It’s no secret that Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney doesn’t agree.
Like Banks was after college, I’m currently uninsured (because I’m technically a freelancer). Which means that, for me, even finding a doctor who will see me is a huge challenge, and, if I did get in, would be entirely unaffordable. I rely on Planned Parenthood for my basic health care (yearly breast exam, pap smear, birth control, and my OB will even look me over for potentially cancerous moles), and, without it, would have no safety net whatsoever. I can’t imagine living in a city without one.
Banks’ candor is really refreshing, regardless of your political affiliation. And I’m pretty into the fact that she’s not afraid to admit to the world that she has “a heavy flow.”
