PETA Suggests James Holmes Go Vegetarian In Prison, Reaches Repulsive New Low

This week, PETA reached an all-time low by recommending that James Holmes, the accused Aurora theatre shooter, switch to a vegetarian diet to “stop the cruelty.” I…I’m just…Ugh.

The vegan non-profit has never been shy about their sometimes-shady, often offensive tactics for drumming up free press and attention. Which is why I thought twice about even writing about this…but then I was so disgusted and offended, I had to.

According to Denver Westward blog, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk sent a letter to the Arapahoe County Sheriff, asking that Holmes (and other inmates) be placed on an all-vegetarian diet while he awaits trial for the murder of 12 people and the injury of 58 others. Because, Newkirk explained, “PETA is urging everyone to take the first step toward making the world less violent simply by choosing meat-free meals.” There’s also a blog post about it on their site which, fair warning, has a picture of some dead, bloody pigs. From the post:

Although the extreme violence inflicted on them rarely makes the news, animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses endure senseless acts of aggression and bloodshed every hour of every day, and their fear and pain are as palpable and real as anyone else’s. Also, extreme cruelty to animals is inextricably linked to acts of violence against human beings.

Yes. PETA has likened eating meat to one of the grisliest mass murders in decades. For no apparent reason other than garnering media attention (again, we had to think twice before publishing this).

Why James Holmes? Why not any of the other criminals in jails across the country? Why not work with lobbyists to urge that all prisoners go vegetarian (which isn’t a terrible idea because it could give them an opportunity to become more sustainable)? Because, of course, suggesting anything else would be less offensive, less shocking, and less, well, PETA-style.

But this is so hugely hurtful to the victims and their families, who have now basically become pawns in PETA’s PR game. It’s hurtful to anyone who’s ever been a victim of violent crimes. And frankly, it’s hurtful to PETA’s cause.

I get that PETA has a shoestring budget, and these kinds of moves work for them, sometimes. I get that they have absolutely no standards regarding what’s too far. Domestic violence? Fair game for PETA. The OJ Simpson trial? A perfect way to get people to stop eating meat. But seriously, this new move is just so unbelievably disrespectful and low. And it’s the kind of thing that, for a long time, made me nervous to even use the term “vegetarian.” Because it conjures up images of people who liken senseless, random violence to hamburgers.

I know that there will be vegetarians and vegans who defend this move because, yes, slaughterhouses are violent places. And yes, the meat industry is pretty cruel to animals. But there’s a time to be an activist, and there’s a time to shut up and be a person who lets other people mourn without putting your agenda on their personal tragedy.

PETA, it’s time for you to stop the cruelty, by stopping your exploitation of other people’s pain.

President, and other members of, PETA I sincerely hope you’re reading this right now. Re-read this statement “PETA is urging everyone to take the first step toward making the world less violent simply by choosing meat-free meals.” and tell me-where is James Holmes’ “choice” in this if the sheriff is the one enforcing this diet on him? Or any other inmate for that matter? You see, it is a matter of CHOICE, not FORCE. You cannot force a person to be peaceful, as that completely nullifies your stance for peace. Forcing a vegan diet on someone else because it’s better for animals is just as bad as the big factory slaughter houses, and is not something that should be a part of your agenda to open people up to veganism. Every time you pull something silly like this I can only equate you with people such as the WBC, and wonder if you truly do think about what you say before you say it.

        you missed the point.

PETA; you incompetent imbeciles! I am vegan, and your nonsensical demands make me want to eat rare, tainted meat. Close your mouth and show some respect. More people will take you seriously if you choose to demonstrate your beliefs via a peaceful justification as opposed to force-feeding kale into people’s mouths.

      • LOLLL!!!

LOL! Kudos to you my fine sir! :)

      • PETA SUCKS!

Wow, as always, brilliant reasoning PETA. Guess who was another widely self proclaimed vegetarian with the same claim… That peace-loving guy named Adolph Hitler. now normally, I don’t like when people compare others to Hitler for shock value. But in this case, he made the exact same arguments that PETA suggests. Namely, vegetarians are more peaceful, evolved and part of the future.
Never make an argument where the other person strongly holding your beliefs is the biggest maniac killer the world has seen in the past 100 years.

Just want to point your attention to a pretty interesting webpage that I stumbled across a few months back, & was reminded of it when I read this article. Dated June 1, 2002, the article is entitled “Vegetarian Food Goes to Jail”. Nothing to do with PETA, but perhaps PETA could come from a different angle if they wanted to promote a less violent world. Whats more, I’d love to see the newstart program implemented here in Australia if the results were really as good as what the article claims!

I’m embarrassed to say I’m a PETA supporter after reading this. I’m a vegan but I don’t agree with the way PETA equates eating meat to mass murder in the same way that mowing the lawn isn’t mass murder. So, I agree with you and I told PETA about how I feel on that post.
It is actually a symptom of post-modern anti-hierarchy in order to include those who have been oppressed by oppressive hierarchies. The problem is they throw the baby out with the bathwater by getting rid of all hierarchies including healthy, growth hierarchies which show us how to lessen the suffering by eating lower on the growth hierarchy. Even many meat-eaters acknowledge this and wouldn’t eat a dolphin because they are self-aware which is a high form of development.

    • Sigh

I can’t believe the people that approve these schemes don’t realize first and foremost that their antics are what the discussions they generate are all about. Through the entire reading of this article and others on the topic all I’m thinking is, “what a bunch of idiots and jerks.” At no point did it occur to me, “hmm… I should really look into what these PETA folks are saying about the animal’s treatment.” In fact if I hadn’t known before hand what PETA was generally about this stunt, and many like it, certainly wouldn’t point it out, at least not a positive aspect. Maybe they should try putting that shoestring budget into “Who are we and what’s our point,” campaign for a couple seasons and see where that goes? Even in the abstract, was I suppose to equate myself with a mass murderer based our sharing a style of diet? What was their point here? Honestly, it’s a lot easier to come away with an assumption that PETA cares more about suffering animals than humans. I mean, “so, brutal, unprovoked, mass murder aside, how ’bout a tofurkey sandwich Jimmy?” Probably (desperately hoping) not their intended statement, but failure to comment on the obvious and all, it doesn’t come off as ironic humor in this instance.
