For Real? Alicia Silverstone, PETA Ask Putin To Let Pussy Riot Member Eat Vegan

When I first brought up this story, one of the other writers here said: “I kind of love Alicia Silverstone. She just does her, you know?” That’s for sure. And right now, ‘doing her’ means writing a letter urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow Russian punk/feminist band Pussy Riot to be served vegan meals in jail. Oh, sweetie …

Three members of Pussy Riot–Maria Alekhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30–were arrested in March for protesting against Putin in a Moscow cathedral. Earlier today, they were found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” and sentenced to two years each in prison. [Hooliganism! That is a real crime in Russia. WTF?]

“I have been following the trial involving three members of the band Pussy Riot,” Silverstone, a longtime animal rights activist and champion of veganism, wrote to Putin.

“As a vegan myself, I was deeply concerned to learn that one of the women, Maria Alekhina, who is a vegan, reportedly collapsed from hunger during a court session. I respectfully request you to ensure that vegan meals are available to Ms. Alekhina — and all prisoners.

… I’m sure you can agree that everyone has the right to show compassion and refrain from harming animals by being vegan. May I please have your assurance that Ms. Alekhina will have access to vegan foods? Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.

Somehow I doubt Putin has much sympathy for the consciences of convicted religion-hating hooligans. But it’s a nice gesture on Silverstone’s part — or is it? The letter was written on behalf of PETA — an organization which has proved time and time again that it’s not above using travesty and tragedy to get out its message. PETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi said in a statement:

“We hope Putin will give serious consideration to Alicia’s request. PETA and Alicia stand ready to help Russian authorities plan nutritious, inexpensive vegan meals for all inmates.”

Yes! Go to Russia, PETA! All of you! Maybe they have hooliganism motivated by self-righteous idiocy on the books, there, too …

This is the first article from Blisstree that really makes me shake my head. Vegan-ism is a legitimate life choice. While I agree it is a bit much to expect such accommodations in a Russian prison, this article mocks the ATTEMPT of people in the community to support people who require a vegan diet. I’m not a big fan of PETA, but this reads like another “Guess what those PETA quacks did this time?!” article. The topic of discussion should be about injustice these women are facing for acts of “hooliganism”. Alas, it received from the author but a simple “WTF?”.

I agree with you. The article has a snarkyness that I found off-putting as well.

Good for Alicia! I don’t see anything silly about her request. Sure, she probably wont make any difference, but at least she gives a crap and tried.

Good article about an attention whore.

The person who wrote this article… is an idiot!
